Judging from the power alone, I'd say the first one is somewhere between Flint and Port Huron on the GTW Flint Sub.

Second one is C&O 614, with the Chessie Steam specal, no way that is 1991, more like 1981.

If I may be permitted to split hairs for a moment...

The trips run with C&O 614 in 1981 were, I believe, known as the Chessie Safety Express. I seem to recall the auxilliary tender carried lettering to that effect. The Chessie Steam Special was powered by ex-Reading 2101and ran in 1977 and 1978.

I can't help much with location of either pictures, although some quick research would seem to indicate that the Chessie Safety express ran in Michigan on the following days in late spring 1981: May 30 to Clio (round trip), May 31 to Grand Ledge (round trip), and June 6 to Grand Rapids (one way). So, assuming the picture is indeed from Michigan, perhaps somebody can recognize a location from along one of those routes...

The May 30th trip to Clio, actually went to Saginaw, I watched the loco get turned at the now gone wye where the line to Pt. Huron comes off the main (wow I have been gone from Saginaw so long, I cant rember the name of the siding, or interlocking where the NYC /GTW/CM crossed).
