Back to the 50's. Bonus if you know why they were likely to be running the left hand main.

Something coming or going onto the South Haven Branch

It is BO Tower. I thought it would be super easy but it's an interesting picture. Across from the tower there is a fenced lot and building where the present connection to the Kalamazoo Branch is. In the pre-Penn Central era the NYC track Elkhart to Grand Rapids is there in the foreground. Crossing Kalamazoo and Michigan Avenues it was to the east side of the Old Dog tavern building. The connection from the mainline to the Kalamazoo Branch was west to south cutting through the present day Bell Brewery property. Going south they backed out of Botsford then diverged south. Coming north they pulled westward onto the main line and backed into Botsford. My suspicion they are backing into Botsford. If they were headed west BO would likely have crossed them over at the tower. If they were running reverse on the mainline the operator would be handling up orders.

Where be it?
Paul Henry Thornapple Trail south of Middleville, which is 12 miles southeast of Grand Rapids on the old MC RR Grand Rapids branch. Final run of the old NYC RR Beeliner RDC trains 388/389 between Grand Rapids and Jackson with stops in Caledonia, Middleville, Hasting, Charlotte, Eaton Rapids, was made on April 25, 1959.

I'm going to agree with railroad1949. The milepost distance from Jackson makes sense.

I found this shot in some obscure corner of the internet. The city it used to lead to is obvious, but don't know what line or where it came from. Anyone else have an idea?

I believe this to be the Central Railroad of New Jersey terminal in Jersey City.

CNJ Communipaw Terminal in Jersey City.

Service ended in 1967 when the Aldene Connection was completed in Roselle Park.

The connection allow trains to access the Northeast Corridor to Newark and Manhattan.

Today this area is apart of Liberty State Park.
