Trackmobiles

Unread post by mikekmac »

Wondering if anyone has spotted any Trackmobiles in service in the Lower Peninsula.

If you don't know Trackmobiles, they're a brand of "mobile railcar mover" formerly made by the Whiting Corporation of Harvey, IL, and now made in Canada. The current models look like this:

http://www.trackmobile.com/ourproductline.htm

But I'm particularly interested in the smaller models (1M, 2TM, 3TM, 5TM) which have their rail wheels at right angles to their road wheels.

Not sure what model, but I know King Milling in Lowell on the MMRR has one. I think Michigan Rail Storage on MQT has one too?

I don't know what model it is, but CSX has at least one in their car shop in Grand Rapids. (I assume they still have it)

There is one at Michigan Packaging in Mason, also, we have one at SRI, and there is one at the elevator in Henderson.

There's also on in North Lansing on the spur the crosses Turner St. just north of the east end of the yard. Not sure what that business is, but they get serviced by covered hoppers there.

Ones in the Bay City area I can think of are Omnisource, Peavey Grain, Essroc and Monitor Sugar.

There is one that switches cars off of CSX and NS around the diamond at Wayne and another at a steel company in Belleville off of the NS Detroit District.

The sugar plant up in Sebwaing (yeah, yeah, I think mispelled it again), had one I think and probably still does.

One of the elevators up in Pigeon (not the big one) has a modified tractor, as does the elevator in Imlay City (sorry, I know you weren't asking for those)...but does anyone know if the big elevator in Pigeon would have one?

Also, for what it's worth, there's at least one running around down in Elkhart (LaFarge?)...

Wow. That's quite a few. Chances are they're all larger/newer units, but worth keeping an eye out for when I get out of town. Holt and Mason are "in town," and will be at the top of my list.

Anyone else have photos?

Last I saw its just the tractor. I don't believe that Michigan Bean a bit farther north has one either. The bean plant just east of Elkton has a trackmobile though I do believe. They also use a tractor at the elevator in Colling.

The guys there run that thing around like a dune buggy. I never knew a trackmobile could move so fast until I saw them running down their spurs once.
Its been a few years, but I did once see a trackmobile back in Michigan Sugar in Caro as well.
