From the very limited information I can find, a brand new GP9 cost approximately $200,000. The initial cost of a diesel locomotive was high relative to a steam locomotive, but the cost savings came from the much much lower cost of maintaining the locomotives.

Yes, that is the price, now. I was curious as to what they cost, brand new.

Define what "new" means? If you're looking at having some fort of road switcher made at one of the major manufacturers, good luck. You'll end up spending over a million on something unreliable and impossible to maintain due to the ridiculous EPA regulations that are strangling the industry.

If you want to send a GP9 out for rebuild, you'll have at least 250k in it before they even talk about paint....Oh, and wait16 months for it.

Uh, we are over -- complicating this--- all I was trying to find out is the price they cost brand new, delivered from EMD, to the RR that ordered them------- as one of the posters already stated, that they were around. 200,000 dollars. Thank you for the answer.

A basic rule of thumb for "back in the day" for new diesel locomotives was a dollar a pound.

Don’t need physical online buildings to Transload rail cars. Plenty of opportunities on the CHS.
There absolutely is potential. Was down that way a few days ago doing some Rail contracting sales pitches to the elevators and other businesses nearby, long story short most want rail service, but the common factor I was told from a few is that CN doesn’t want to serve smaller customers. I see the wiki for the Charlotte Southern here on RRF stated that CN wanted 500+ annual cars for interchange for there to be service. Seems to be accurate.

Well, are any of the ADBF GP9s still in service? How many? How many are for sale? :?: Does Jail have a couple GP9s working too? I suppose they'd keep some on both these lines for MOW track work and back-up power, right? :?: :?: I like the old paint better than the new!!!!

I think 1223 is an SW1200. Two stacks. Plus it has EMD switcher 'transfer' trucks that are not originally. I think the truck were from a Canadian locomotive from the markings on it.

The 836 was built as a Rock Island SW8 of the same number and was bought and rebuilt by ChromeCrankshaft who purchased a ton of locomotives from RI when it went bankrupt and rebuilt it with an upgraded block, increasing the horsepower and technically making it a 900 hp SW900. Checker Motors Corporation in Kalamazoo bought it from ChromeCrankshaft for a big GM job they got and sold it to A&B about fifteen years ago.

At RR Pictures Archives it's listed as a SW900 originally built as a SW9. It notes that ADBF changed it from a SW1200 to a SW900.

Nice catch, I did not realize that was entered wrong in RRPicturesArchives for all these years.

Per this Flickr photo by John Eagan, apparently Rail America was known to "reshoe" locomotives. So I will mark it as a SW9.

John Eagan wrote:Adrian & Blissfield SW9 1223 presents a diliema. I frame checked this one and it is stamped 4230-1, which makes it former Bellfonte Central 5323, but that one never had Flexicoil trucks! The unit went to Kyle's South Central Tennessee RR when the BFC folded, and SCTR/Rail America has been known to "reshoe" locomotives, and those frame gussets are not the typical EMD notches for the brake cylinder clearance. This unit has the Saginaw Valley Ry. paint job it carried from 2003-2007, then went to The Andersons 999990 in 2008, so with that frame stamp that I'll call the gospel truth, I'm taking bets that this is the old Pennsylvania shortline's pride and joy built in 1953!
Interestingly enough when it was SGVY 999 it was marked as a SW12!

I thought that was implied with the Railmover listing... "Blue carded and in service EMD GP-9s with alignment couplers"

1751 is the only unit for sale?

Seems to be the only one listed right?

I think 1758 is staying with some “modifications” to it. I think 1751/1760 both going south of the border.
