CN Flint Sub train changes

Unread post by arty flowers »

Because of the congested ports in Halifax NS and St Johns NB, The Maersk container ship docked there will now go to Montreal and drop the rest of the containers there. So intermodals 148 and 149 are now 146 and 147. In addition to this CN will extend intermodals 120 and 121 from Montreal through the Flint Sub starting in October. On the freight side CN has split up 399 out of Toronto and train 395 will again start out of Toronto and will run to Eola Yard while 399 will operate to Salem Ill
instead of terminating in Gary.

Thanks Arty Flowers for the update.

I will be good to have 395 back and new intermodal trains 120 and 121 are great news!

Back in the 90s, we had 142, 143, 144, 145, 148, 149, 150 and 151 all at one point. I don't think we will ever have 8 intermodals a day again, but 4 per day instead of 2 will be nice change.

Word on the street is that one of these pairs (120/121) will run Flint and South Bend subs, and at some point the other pair (146/147) will run via the Holly and Mount Clemens subs and working Moterm as 142/143 did in years past. Heard this from a number of sources including some CN men out in the field, so there may be some good info here. Didn't hear anything about October, but rather early in the year at some point. If it comes to pass, I'd imagine that L514 would be abolished, saving crew, fuel and locomotive costs. Intermodal seems to be a never ending experiment with regard to how traffic flows in and out of Detroit on CN. Sounds like a new plan may be in the offing - or not.

Lansing Railfan,

So what you are saying is that right now we have 148 and 149, along with (also right now 146 and 147), with the addition of 120 and 121 in October?? (Haven't been on the mainline recently, but didn't know that 146, 147, 148, and 149 are all running daily right now??).

I'm a little confused. Sounded like 146 and 147 will become 148 and 149 with new trains 120 and 121 in October?

It does make sense that 514 would become 146 and 147 b/c there still is the need for containers to move to and from Moterm.

Original post said 146/147 replace 148/149.

New information clarified that 146/147 are in addition to 148/149.

120/121 are trains that run from Halifax to Toronto. They will continue onto Chicago IF they have enough containers and it sounds like right now they will. I’m sure in current CN fashion they will consistently add auto racks whenever possible to these trains.
