What happened to the PM stopping at New Buffalo in the first place? Didn't they do it up until like 15 years ago?

It was a bus stop station. They built the new station on the AML to have access to more places and trains.

I think a new connection would make the most sense if the AML trains went onto the CSS at Michigan City, creating a passenger train expressway around the NS*. Then it would make sense to have the Pere Marquettes join them.

*The idea there is to finish that long-stalled CREATE Project at Grand Crossing. So the PM would go from the PM to AML at New Buffalo, AML to CSS at Michigan City, CSS to the IC/Metra Electric at Pullman, then IC to the Waterlevel Route at Grand Crossing. At that point the NS is past most of the major junctions and has enough tracks (or space for tracks) to easily accommodate what runs today and more into the future.

That was one of the ideas ... Following the NS line seems to be more likely (if anything is built east of Grand Crossing).
