Newaygo grain elevator

Unread post by kd_1014 »

Is the grain elevator still in use in Newaygo? I have seen unit grain trains go north and south in the past but not for some time now.

Still in operation. There have been a few trains but not as many as other years. They weighed a trailer for a couple years ago. Talking with the guy in the office he said the corn density was low that year and did not meet the requirements of most train load buyers. The majority was being trucked less than 200 miles and consumed more locally.

That elevator can only handle 65 car trains, while everybody wants 90 car trains now. I believe MQT handled some 90-car trains for them but it is clumsy compared to the newer setups, and the site to wholly landlocked by the river and downtown.
