LSRC Derailment - Bay City 10/13/06

Unread post by ~Z~ »

LSRC put some on the ground today, tore up some track pretty good.

11 cars of stone derailed, 1 car is on it's side, stone dumped out.
Hulchers is on scene cleaning it up. One car is set to be scrapped, LSRC 5944. Said to be at the intersection near Hart St and Sidney St in Bay City. From a map, looks like it's at Defoe Park, near the Saginaw River.

All information word of mouth from Patrick via voicemail. He would have pictures, but his memory card is full, and so is his computer's hard drive. Thanks for the update!

Seems like there's been a few derailments on LSRC recently. Is it due to track conditions not being able to handle long, heavy stone trains?
PatC created a monster, 'cause nobody wants to see Don Simon no more they want AARR I'm chopped liver, well if you want AARR this is what I'll give ya, bad humor mixed with irrelevant info that'll make you roll your eyes quicker than a ~Z~ banhammer...

No Paul. The derailment isn't on HESR tracks. its on LSRC east of the HESR main. 702 got out and back in just fine running with the 5086, 2001, and 8804. 740 assisted in pulling the rear of the train back and shoving it over the bridge to the SBS side of the river. Look for trains next week to use BOTH bridges untill the main is repaired which ought to be a while as about 1000 feet of track is GONE.

Channel 12's Terry Camp states "The railroad cars are owned by the Lake State Railway Company and the tracks are owned by the Huron and Eastern Saginaw Valley Railroad."

Isn't that section of track owned by LSRC...???

That is crazy. I have seen a number of trains right down there and they have always come through no problem. Anyway I believe actually I am certain that those tracks are LSRC, the news made a goof like usual.

Would this be an accurate diagram of track ownership in that area? HESR in Blue and LSRC in Red.

that maps very accurate...an I love the drama channel
...or is that the news?? what a bunch of maroons...they
interview these women who have no idea what the trains
even move on those tracks, and yet...Oooooooh we are
all going to die an it was so loud...Give Me a Break....a
train with hopper gons carrying stones....people freak
out now when a blue jay drops on their car window....LOL.

I lived by tracks for alot of My life in Bay City and only
ever had 2 derailments an both were with loaded coal cars
an both were late at night...so I wish these reporters would
just go an talk with the railroad officials or the police in these matters
....cause the public...unless its a railfan, they are
so misinformed and really just over reactive, its very sad
and at the same time just obnoxiously funny...and some
of the reporters don't help either because they are terribly
bad with the facts on the story as well.

Sorry but your map is wrong ! will send you a corrected one
GJ - haz material is carried down those tracks granted not everyday
QUIT blaming the news reporters at least they said something.
The derailment is away from homes in the area except for the last 2 or 3 houses by the roadway
IT'S A MESS DOWN THERE !

GJ:

For 15 Yrs, I worked as a volunteer Firefighter. For 9 yrs, I worked as a volunteer EMT on a ambulance. NUMEROUS times I responded to an incident, only to read about it in the paper. Most of the time, I couldn't believe what I was reading. I was at the incident, yet what I read was totally different from what I experienced.
Does the news media get this wrong...??..You betcha! Unfortunately, it is all about ratings and the higher the hype gets, the better in their view. From my vantage point, the news is nothing more than entertainment anymore, if you want to call it that.

ok.. the map isn't correct.. its close.. the southwest leg of the wye was ripped out almost 10 years ago. and the HESR has a siding now between har street and Marquette AVE. Now.. because i recieved a PM from a member.. let me explain ownership. the HESR ONLY owns their main line. the switch at hart street leading east towards the Wirt stone dock and such is OWNED by the LSRC. They own everything east of the HESR main. their tracks pick back up in Kawkawlin with the HESR owning way out to Old Kawkawlin road. Hope this helps.. please ask if you don't understand.

heres a link to derailment pics and video.

just laughs an shakes my head...
same old people trying to run the
show....an they could not get the
info right the first time an now
they are saying that the rest of
us are wrong...first off it was 40
cars and yes it is wrong to add on
info to hype your own bells an
whistles an its also wrong to
say that others here donot have
an opinion that map is the correct
track area...the railroad atlas I have
from a rail company shows the same
dang thing......hauling stones is NOT
a major catastrophy...an if those
tracks would of been replaced years
ago, this would not of happen...but
then again look at how old the rail
cars an other equipment are too

remember GJ, its ok to have an oppion, but when posting, you must make sure others know that it is YOUR oppion. I fully agree with you however. this would not have happened if the tracks had been replaced or even taken care of. think about it.. 3 derailments on this railroad in like 3 weeks. what a disappointment.

patrick...I agree with you....I know the STB
has been on them to do something more
with track replacement an maintenance it
seems...not sure how this situation gets
rectified if they donot want to put money
into it...I would think that putting new
track would guarantee better work success
an would show other potential customers
that they are serious. thanks, GJ

Hey Patrick Nice pics. Looks like that was a pretty bad derailment. Too bad I wasn't home when it happened I could have seen the footage. Looks like one of the worst I have seen in Bay City, I saw the coal train derailment 3 years ago on the CSX in the southend and I think there were only 6 cars that came off. The track in that one wasn't as damaged either. From what I could see in your photos there is nothing left of those tracks. I wonder how long it will take them to repair the track. I will definately have to check out the site when I come home again, I will just stay clear if a train comes through. Saw a train on that track last month and seemed to be fine. It was a stone train too.
