In 1998 they had a gigantic 10,000 person rally up in Humboldt county, California. Thousands of people camped onsite. When I got there, the choices were slim except for some lovely spots on the beach of the Eel River. This time of year, the Eel was barely a creek by Michigan standards, and you could walk, splash or leap all the way across.
Anyway, first night I'm sleaping, and about 3 AM what do I hear but the growl of some EMD 567C's. I look out of my tent and there's the Northwestern Pacific, headlight lighting up the side of the mountain on the other side, winding a freight train down the river valley on the other side at about 10 mph.
What I didn't know was, that would be the last of that.
The rails are still there... that is, if you don't mind fishing them out of the Eel River.
