South Shore Line commuter railroad staff are investigating the mysterious uncoupling of a loaded train Wednesday morning.

Train No. 112 was just west of the Gary/Chicago Airport station in a 10-mph speed zone at 7:35 a.m. when the last car separated from the rest of the train, said John Parsons, spokesman for the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District.

The train and the detached car stopped 120 feet apart after the emergency air brakes activated, Parsons said. There were no injuries among the 300 passengers or crew on the eight-car train, he said.

The operator backed up to let passengers walk from the lone coach into the rest of the train, which continued with seven cars and arrived in Chicago's Randolph Street Station 67 minutes late, Parsons said.

The uncoupled car was returned to Michigan City for tests. After no irregularities were found, officials sent the couplers to the manufacturer for more analysis, Parsons said.
