Chicago, Fort Wayne & Eastern RR

Unread post by Y@ »

Let's imagine that instead of RailAmerica's CF&E leasing the former Pennsy from Chicago to Crestline in 2004, a different group leased it and started a railroad under the same name.

In early 2004, CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern and Mid-America Transportation LLC came to terms on a five year lease agreement that would see a new railroad starting operations between Chicago, IL, and Crestline, OH. Headquartered in Fort Wayne, IN, at the former Pennsylvania Railroad Piqua Yard, the CF&E officially began operations on August 1st, 2004, using a fleet of locomotives leased from CSX, NS and NALX. It wasn't until early 2006 that the CF&E finally had a full stable of their own locomotives in service, which were all purchased from the North American Locomotive Leasing Company in Bowling Green, KY. At the end of the original five year lease, a two year extension was agreed upon so that the three companies involved could continue to work on a long term operations solution. In the final days of 2011, the trio came to an agreement of a full sale of the line from Hobart, IN, to Crestline, OH, with both NS and CSX retaining trackage/haulage rights over the entirety of the line. The sale was completed in February 2012.

In addition to the ex-PRR mainline, the CF&E operates a few industrial tracks along the system which are listed below, along with a list of interchange points between the CF&E and other railroads..

CF&E Industrial Tracks
Decatur Branch - Fort Wayne to Decatur, includes former Erie trackage in Decatur.
Van Wert IT - Serves customers north and south of the Estry diamond in Van Wert.
Delphos IT - Serves customers southwest of Delphos.
Forest IT - Serves a customer north of the mainline in Forest. Track was reinstalled in 2010.
Spore IT - Serves rock quarry northwest of Bucyrus.

CF&E Interchange Locations
Various railroads: IHB Blue Island Yard, Chicago, IL.
Norfolk Southern: Fort Wayne, IN.
CSX: Lima, OH, and Crestline, OH.

As of November 2016, the CF&E rosters 23 locomotives with 21 active and two out of service. The railroad maintains crew bases in Fort Wayne and Lima. Below is a roster of CF&E engines and a list of road and local freights.

It's a rather busy Friday evening on the CF&E. Here's a rundown of what's out there right now.

L-WARVAL went to Valpo from Warsaw this afternoon. Train is currently in the siding at Hamlet to wait on the R-FTWCHI before continuing back to Warsaw to tie up for the weekend. Power is CFER 4000 with seven cars.

L-FTW-A is on duty at 2030 with a short night ahead of them. Looks like they have a couple hours of switching in Piqua Yard and not much else to do.

R-FTWCHI had a late call of 1545 today and departed Fort Wayne shortly before 1700. Train was by Columbia City at 1745. Power is CFER 9395, CFER 3322 and CFER 7006 with 68 cars for the IHB.

X-FTW-A is called for 2100 in Fort Wayne to pick up a rail train from SDI in Columbia City.

L-LIM-A just tied up in Lima around 1730 after spending their day working around Lima.

L-LIM-B is still working in Delphos as of 1745 with CFER 3325 and CFER 4144.

X-LIM-A is on duty for 1800 in Lima to recrew the L-LIM-B at Delphos.

X-LIM-B was on duty at 1715 to cab to Crestline to pick up a grain train from CSX. Their computer shows CSXT 431 and NS 9515 with 90 empties for Hamlet, IN.

Early heads up on this. R-FTWCHI is westbound between Valpo and Hobart currently with CFER 9392 and 9401 for power and 52 cars. Computer shows the CHIFTW will turn back tomorrow with 109 cars for Fort Wayne. Both the 9392 and 9401 retain full SP paint as opposed to the other two ex-SP tunnel motors on roster; 9395 in CF&E paint and 9386 which is patched. The 9392 is making its first run in a few months after being shopped in Fort Wayne with engine problems. 9401 will lead east with a planned on duty time of 1200 for the crew.
