Shortline Location Updates June 2023

The Grand Elk just went by the Elkhart cam at 9:30am towards the Elkhart yard. Interestingly the train was led by NS 1127, NS 1112, WAMX 4209 and WAMX 4189 with 56 cars in tow. A mix of box cars, covered hoppers, tank cars, two empty NS hopper cars, an empty bulkhead and an empty center beam.

I drove out to Comstock last night for my softball game and saw NS 1112 and NS 1127 sitting on the spur with their gravel train. I find it interesting that they led the Grand Elk down to Elkhart today. Does anyone know why they would have done that? All of their gravel hoppers are still sitting in Kalamazoo.

Update: NS 1112 and NS 1127 just went back towards Kalamazoo by themselves at 10:38am.

I see WAMX 4209 and WAMX 4189 already went south after they went up north yesterday through Bryon Center at 7:05 pm. Grand lk Job 303 must have gone south around 10 pm yesterday thru Wyoming. Also interesting to see NS lead a Elk train.

HESR 3865 (Rail America Geep) led two orange SD40s (3390 and 3484) running their daily dropoff to the Durand yard at 17:10.

This was my first time watching the Durand cams where I saw a non-orange HESR loco (although, I'm not a G&W orange hater like some railfans).

Marquette northbound made it as far as Nelson’s farm market for the weekend, 4 pack of SD40-2 oranges on the head end, with BPRR 3445 in the south most position and would make a good roster shot in the morning from the side of M37. Probably 30-40 cars to go north.

Meanwhile, great to see Newaygo yard jammed full of grain hoppers. A yellow MQT geep was tied down near the crossing. It looked like another cut of hoppers were stashed in the siding at White Cloud.

I drove down to my friends house today south of Hartford so I decided to drive past the trans load business that is east of Hartford. I was on 59 1/2 Ave and these three engines were sitting on the west side of the crossing. There were a bunch of cars at the trans load and then a bunch of refrigerated cars, covered hoppers and tank cars near the cold storage on Red Arrow. The engines that were sitting there were GLLX 1512, GLLX 4228 and GLLX 921.
