Local Train 515 past MP 22.5 at 7:49 am with 26 cars, mostly loaded centerbeams and some cars for the DCON interchange with 5416 as power again today. You know everything is going to be OK as long as 515 is running.

M383 was by Mount Clemens depot at 06:28. CN/CN/CN, 426 axles. Stopped south of the Chesterfield detector as the axle count was not jiving with the info the conductor had. Must have been alerted by the Smiths Creek detector and waited until Chesterfield to double check. Under way a short time later.

Southbound 514 by Linden at 3:38pm with Light Engines 9618 and 5340. Most excitement there has been in the last few days during the daylight hours.
Hey Manistique - they are back to a 451 Symbol now instead of 251???? It was 451, then 251, now back to 451 again?

515 SB OS past MP 22.2 at 4:35 pm lite still.
Yes, they recycle those three train numbers on this train. They all have a meaning of some sort. They must be combining 451 and 401 at Pontiac now before heading to Chicago as I suspected.

Re: CN Updates April 2020
251, for example (I believe) are numbers reserved for mostly, if not all autorack / automotive trains.
271 on the Mt. Clemens Sub = autoracks. 276, 280 on the Southbend, Holly, and Flint Subs = autoracks. Old Train Numbers 273, 275, 277, 281 were all or mostly all autorack / auto related trains.
I say this because 251 has lost its autorack / automotive traffic, so what 251 did occasionally carry that was not auto related, along with the combination of 401 (if that is indeed happening), equals a number that is designated for more of a general freight situation, hence 451.
Now the difference between and 300 series and 400 series trains I don't know - maybe priority?
Now I could be wrong on all this, but I actually think I am pretty close.

Basically, M series trains (300's) are long haul inter-divisional manifests, and A series trains (400's) are short haul intra-divisional manifests.David Lang wrote:

NB 515 with a long train was notch 8 up the Hill at about 40 mph when it passed MP 22.5 at 7:45 pm, the turbo of the SD40-2 screaming and the GP-38-2 chanting like mad.
