E800-23 with BNSF engine #8400 appears to be at Wells Siding mp CG43.3 @ 13:30 & probably dropping off the pusher engines. Heard him reporting from the east end of Wells but should have gone over DD44.2 a few minutes ago.
DD44.2 reporting E800-23 @ 14:49 with 644 & 9,482 feet long. BNSF engine #8400 + 1 & 158 cars. No idea what the extra cars are until he arrives Bangor in a few.
E800-23 at Bangor mp CG60.7 @ 15:07:15 with BNSF engines #8400 + #8479, 43 Inter-modal empties, followed by 131 empty coal cars. Saw a darker coal empty different from the rest, #RWSX 94587. He cleared the St Joseph Bridge @ 16:04

Just saw it go past Glenlord.

I love how CSX has quit pretending this is anything other than a backwater operation. Got some TOFC empties that need to go back to the BNSF? Stick ‘em on the front of the coal empties. Why not!

Got a repaired bad order car on a spur with a six axle restriction and D700 has six axle power and only a couple cars? Why, have Q326 stop and use a dozen cars to grab the the car that needs to be picked up. What else would you do with the hottest train on the railroad?!

?????

The coal trains already go right past CSX's 59th St intermodal yard and right to the BNSF. Why burn an extra crew and extra locomotives when you already have a train going there? Sending them via Q327 would take them to Barr yard, which would clog that yard with unnecessary cars and require another crew to bring them to the BNSF.

D700 has a hard enough time making it back in 12 hours with all of the work they have. Perhaps they didn't have enough time to pick up said bad order. Maybe said bad order was a hot car and needed to move on the next train available. If Q326 had enough time, why not have them stop and pick it up?

These are both instances where the PSR solution actually makes sense and saves money, crew starts and equipment.

Agreed. I’m not disputing that operationally, both of those moves make sense. I’m just being a little sarcastic because I find it a sad to see our local railroad with so few trains and so little traffic that such moves make sense.

Last summer, I paid a visit to my original home town of Moorhead, MN, and watching the endless parade of BNSF trains made it painfully obvious how slow things are in West Michigan.

Very true, but who was the bright one that put the empty well cars in front of the 131 gons?? That just screams derailment at me.

And why would that scream derailment? Empty coal gons come in at only 42K or so, what do intermodals come in at? Not a problem...and there are rules and if the consist goes into the computer that runs afoul the computer kicks out ERROR and the consist can't be printed and the train doesn't go. No consist, no train.
Let the big guys worry about the small stuff.

Everyone seems to think empty coal trains weigh a ton. An empty 130 car coal train weighs about 2800 tons, if that.

Aluminum cars. Lower light weight means more coal can be carried and still fit the 286,000 lb gross rail weight. Besides they usually move in units where tailing tonnage isn't an issue.

It does make for metal spaghetti in derailments though. They get nicely shredded

Decent sized Q326 East at Glenlord Rd/Stevensville right now.

2 locomotives and some interesting loads of tarped scrap (?) in gondolas at the head end.
