Q32904 by Howell at 08:15 with CSX 5340+5274 with 105 cars. Two long jags of tank cars in the train. Q32804 went east 06:50 with CSX 8138+3301 and 125 cars. No long cuts of stone empties today. Not sure why they turned the power around and had the EMD leading.

The dd at 104.3 just got something for dragging equipment. Axle 22-24 and 54-55. 200 axles total. I didn't know anything was out there moving. 329 cleared the blocks a while ago. I did hear a hi railer at the 92 earlier. Would that possibly set it off like that?

Hyrail vehicles typically do not activate DDs. When signal maintainers test them they may touch of a few axles manually, and trip the dragging paddles, but I don’t think they’d stand there and cause 200 axles. Usually just a handful! And then they usually follow it up by saying “Signal maintainer test at DD xxxx” over the radio. At least, that’s how I’ve seen and heard it done.

The HBD's allow us to type in "x" amount of axles for a test train and we have at times selected 100 or more axles to allow us the time to walk out of the equipment house and onto the track after hitting the "Enter" key & it also afforded time to test the draggers or to inspect the internal optics (mirror & lens) for each HBD scanner. The metallic flanges of the Hi-Railer's rail wheels (or anything metallic for that matter like our keys, a railroad spike, etc) are detected by the magnetic transducers the HBD uses for axle count & the infra-red samples the HBD scanners collect from each wheel bearing. If I was just checking the mirror & lens for each HBD scanner, I wouldn't key in a "test train", I would simply wave something metallic over the transducer & look inside the HBD scanner with a flash light when the shutter opened.
