NKP 765 to CVSR

Unread post by CN_Okemos »

Has anyone heard any rumors or factual information on when NKP 765 will be departing Ft. Wayne for the Cleveland area to join the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad for September excursions? I'm anxious to watch it roll thru Berea.

As I have said in the other post, it will not be going via Berea. This is not from factual inside info, but basic knowlage of who owns the tracks. The tracks from Independence, Oh, where the shops are north is ownd by CSX. CSX will not allow steam to run on there rail. So no entrance from the north. I would look farther south to a interchange partner.

One possible scenario I can think of is NS from Ft Wayne to Toledo or Bellevue and then onto the W&LE into Akron

Time for a bump since the move is 2 days away.

It's gonna be an early morning for those of you in Northwest Ohio. I've heard middle of the night departure from Fort Wayne early Thursday morning, scheduled to arrive in Bellvue around 9am.

Probably 100% a diesel will be in front of 765 on the NS, there's a chance for no diesel on the Wheeling, but I wouldn't hold out hope. The only thing I haven't been able to confirm is which way they are going when they hit Spencer, I've heard both Akron and Canton.

I would guess the fastest, to the north. At the NS imposed 40 MPH for steam, that is three hours from Ft. Wayne to Bellevue, by time table milage, so looking for at latest 6 am departure. They said the same about trainfestival and they left at 0400. I am planing to be to New Haven by 0400.

As we are 24 hours away, I ask my regular group of guys, what time do you want to start receving up dates? If it starts to move at 0400 for example, I dont want to wake anyone up. Give me a rough time, when to call or text so we can start to let people know.

text or call anytime after 0630 - I'm free at 0800 and will be calling you at that time to see where it's at for me to plot an intercept...

Thanks!

We are aware that this will be a ferry move only and likely the 765 will be towed by an NS diesel....

Yup! But when's the last time you saw a NKP Berk moving by bracket mast signals under ANY circumstances? :D

Besides, no reason you can't get nifty shots just 'cause a "dirty diesel" is in the way!

1993 to be exact...

I guess its not "quite" the same MDH. If it were leading with the diesel trailing, then I'd be a bit more giddy, but...some of us recall the days of NS steam moves on a regular basis, so this is a slight anticlimax.

Incidentally, we're riding the trips on the CVSR...so we'll get our Birk fix.

Which one? I'll be on the "tour of the line" trip on the 19th.

Guess I must be stupid of something, as I LOVE my STEAM no matter how it runs. Some of us are not as fortunate as you were to live near a steam friendly railroad. Some of us, until the past 15 years or so, were luck to see mainline steam at all, assisted or not, with in a hundred miles of our homes, but mabey once a year. No need to put a damper on what is going to be a AWESOME day, just because you have done it before, without a leader.

No damper intended, but apparently perceived. I simply wanted people to be grounded in that this is a tow move, and you're not going to see the 765 triumphantly pound through NW Ohio. And I do fondly recall 1218, 611, 765, 567 trips that were so common during summer months you took them for granted.

I do agree MDH that shots CAN be had. I just wanted to make sure folks knew this was not a solo move as I've gotten questions asked assuming it was.

And no assumptions were made that you are "stupid"...other then your own. I regret you perceive my comments as an insult to your intelligence, but alas, that is the lovely nature of the web.

The stupid was not a total direction at you, as I have had other people ask why I am spending x amount of money and time, just to chase a steam loco, and one that is going to be pulled at that.

In Michigan last year were had plenty of fun chasing the "ferry move" from Ft. Wayne up to Owosso, even though 765 was towed the entire way. I even have a picture taken from on top of the Argo Dam that looks like 765 is crossing the Huron River Bridge in Ann Arbor without assistance.

(Granted this was the first time steam had run over this section of line in lord know how long, maybe since the AA stopped using steam).
