CSX Train Location Updates - February 2024

If I’m not mistaken was not CSX #3201 just recently serviced? You would think that would include checking and topping off the radiator but that’s just me I guess.

R597-22 @ 15:40 copied their EC1 to depart the power plant in West Olive, Mi mp CGP 1.0 & diverge onto the Fremont sub-div & head south to the Grand Rapids sub-div in Holland, Mi with BNSF engine #8434 & 130(??) empty coal cars & rear dpu BNSF engine #9208. He’ll take Wells Siding mp CG41.4 & tie down. He will use his power to move C800-21 that had tied down on the Main Track at Wells due to 1 of his pusher engines, the CSX #3201, not having water in its radiator. Will need a visual confirmation for R597 to confirm if he has both of his engines on the headend or he's running in the usual fashion with a leader & a rear dpu.

R597-22 @ 18:38 eastward cleared the Holland, Mi Depot mp CG25.3 with BNSF engines #8483 + #9234 & 130 loaded coal cars & rear dpu CSX engines #3201 + #3293 & BNSF engines #9208(?) + #8434. CSX engine #3201 had failed due to lack of water in its radiator. This was C800-22 that had tied down on the main track Wells mp CG41.4 today. In about ½ mile he’ll diverge onto the west end of the Wye & onto the Fremont sub-division.

L302-22 @ 18:53 westward reported by the Defect Detector mp CH79.9 Okemos, Mi with 264 axles. CSX engines #5285 + #5445(?) & 63 cars. He has work for Lansing. This is only about the 7th time I've ever heard this DD site reporting (heard on the Broadcastify CSX West Michigan scanner)

"Servicing" for the engines while out at the plant in West Olive typically just means cleaning them and emptying the rail pail. If they need mechanical services or a quarterly inspection, they have to get sent out to a shop. Oddly enough, they were due to get sent out later this week or next week to get swapped out. A lot of people don't realize locomotives don't use coolant, just straight water. When it gets cold, the engines stay running to keep the water from freezing. If they fail to restart for some reason, there is a plug called a "guru plug" that is designed to fail open and dump the water to prevent it from freezing in the engine block.

CSX train I132 came to Detroit with UP "Powered by our People" SD70ACe #1111 train trailing second (per 'Heritage Units')! It was spotted on H.U. (by Imvalkyriee) at 4:46 p.m. in Lincoln Park! OK, will this power take an Intermodal Train south from Livernois Yard tomorrow, Wednesday Feb. 22? Where likely will this power take the next train? Illinois? Would this cool engine likely lead? Or will it stay trailing? Yes, so many questions! I have never seen this engine!!!!!!!!

OH YEAH!!!! I caught UP "Powered by our People" SD70ACe #1111!!!! We went down to Livernois Yard, turned down Jon Kronk Road from Livernois! Decided to circle the yard knowing there is not much access!!!! Right then I saw UP 1111 with UP 7337! They were switching to pick up cars! We turned down Central Street and mom stopped just past the bridge! I photographed the cool engine on the bridge! It picked up Well Cars and I decided to climb up the embankment of the bridge! I made it and got pix! Saw the train switching and I finally captured this loco for the first time! I got it around 5 p.m. Glad I went in the hopes I would see something! WOW, I got it switching! This will depart later on train L131 ! Last night, they had traveled as lite power from the power plant in West Olive, Mi into Holland apparently to service the CSX #3201 that was found to have no water in its radiator.

M327-23 @ 05:16 Grand Rapids, Mi job briefing with the RN Dispatcher: CSX engines #5477 + #5273 & 130(?) cars (95 ? loads + 35 ? empties). He’s building his train. Low volume and "static hissing" for this job briefing heard on channel 14.
