The building dates from 1887 and was a very unique structure. The station was built to serve the Milwaukee Road and Soo Line whose tracks crossed here. The media reports that the Escanaba and Lake Superior RR was using the building at the time of the fire.

I once saw fourteen (14) Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range RR locomotives start an impossibly long string of empty ore jennies near the station on a very cold winter night. That is a sound I will never forget.
