When cropping a photo, you obviously want to crop the subject. But what part of the subject do you crop around? Take the picture below for example. Would you make the nose the center point, the whole engine, both engines, etc?

I'm reading through that thread as well and I have a couple of questions.

What are they referring to as "wedgies"?

And what is this "acceptance" they are referring to? Aren't all pictures added to railpictures.net "accepted" when you upload them, or is there another area of viewing for pictures that are better than others out of the hundreds that are uploaded daily? I'm new to rp.net, so there is much for me to learn yet.

What's a Wedgie?
Wedgies are what that bully gave you back in junior high, when he grabbed your underwear and yanked it up the crack of your ass. Sadly, wedgies are also the most common type of action shot. Wedgies get their name from the wedge shape of the train as it appears in this type of shot. It doesn't take much imagination to shoot a wedgie. Chances are, if you just walked up to somebody, gave them a camera, and asked them to take a picture of a train, they would shoot a wedgie. All you really have to do is point your camera at a train and take the picture; the result is likely to be a wedgie.

Railpictures net does not accept all shots, very pickey about what they accept, I have had 100's if not 1,000's rejected by them, that is why I brought that particular photo to question, artistic yes RP quality no. Bad motive, high sun, too dark tolight., bad motive soft,shadows, bad angel, heat distortion from exauhst. to name a few.
Not complainig its there site, but to see somthing like that acepted just suprises youa little.
There site has definatly made me a better photographer, made me think about sun angles, shadows, ect.

Would Scotts Avitar be a sorta wedige? I just go by 1/3rds, for instance the shot below is what I call a line shot if you divided it into thirds, a line would split the nose, as there is something interesting to be seen such as the signals, and rail.

If you have a photo editing program that lets you crop just fool around in that until you like your photo, as you can always click the undo button, in the shot you posted, I would crop from an inch out from the nose, and two inches below the engine to still show the spur. I would leave the trees on the far side, makes it look like the train just doesn't come out of the side of the picture.
