If you are looking for a cheap and basic DSLR, I would suggest the Canon XTi. It is a fairly old digital DSLR, but it is a great starter one. I have a XTi and I really like it. I found mine on eBay with a 18-55 lens for $340, and that was almost two years ago. I would suspect that they have gone down in price.

Hope this helps!

There are some good deals on Sonys on ebay the a350, a500, a550.. The a500 is a really good camera but cost might be an issue.

Ben's suggestion was a good one. Save up another $50-100 and try to find a used DSLR. You'll be happy you did. :)

If used isn't your cup of tea, and you can save the extra money, watch the Best Buy circular, when they're trying to move their old stock, sometimes they'll knock quite a bit off of their DSLR and other digital cameras.

If you're looking to buy a DSLR, stop in at your local camera store (or any of your friends that own a DSLR) and pick up a few different models of each brand and pick them up and hold them in your hand. You want to make sure they are going to be comfortable.

Kevin, the wife got us the T3 earlier this year, still figuring things out and having fun. Came with the 18-55 lens and added the 70-300 lens. I use to be a Minolta guy, but they are gone. Have fun with it and check out the Canon forum on line.

Congrats on your new toy, Kevin. And as M.D. stated, make sure to check out the Canon forum. Lots of helpful people there and a world of information about your camera and photography in general.
