Olympus E-30

Unread post by Variance »

This camera is a thing of beauty!

The factory reps were in today and they brought two with them. In body image stabilization, 5 frames per second, articulated lcd screen, live view, fastest AF available... just way too awesome...

Another month and I should have it, plus this lens! I'm excited...

Oh yeah... for anyone who's curious... Nikon will be in The Camera Shop of Muskegon tomorrow, the 18th. Stop by and visit.

Hey, what happened to the other screen name you were using?

I know Olympus doesn't have all the nation wide "Good 'ole boys" club following that Nikon and Canon have, but they have some significant advantages. Anywho... I didn't post as Camblogger because this is a personal post :P

I tell you what, I have my digital rebel and my 70-300 IS (yeah, it's crap I know... that's why I sold it) but with IS built into the body and having such a light weight to it, it's perfect for hiking. The 2x modifier, over the 1.5 (Nikon) or 1.6 (Canon), really makes a difference when it comes to wildlife. I can get away with a much lighter weight lens with just as much oomph to it. :)

Plus! Olympus teaches classes at our stores for people. Although, Nikon is now added to the list! Our Nikon rep is a really nice guy; with quite a bit of knowledge.

I can't wait!

I considered an Olympus but didn't buy one because I thought there were less support areas if I need to have it Fixed. Whats your take on teh Sony DSLR's? I considered them as well but the Canon 450D won.

Sony's great if you have a bunch of $$ invested in the older Minolta AF Maxxum Lenses. They are making nice DSLRs but it seems like with everything else that has "Sony" on it, you are paying for the name. Their lenses seem to cost more than Canon or Nikon lenses and it appears that the older Maxxum lenses from Minolta are getting harder to find so you're stuck buying the new Sony version.

I"ve got two older Minolta lenses. A 18-55 and a 55-200 booth were great lenses. But they are for Film.

Doesn't matter Mike, if they are from the Minolta Maxxum series they will probably work on the new Sony DSLRs as the cameras use the old Minolta mount.

Yep they are Sigma lenses that fit on the Maxxum 9000 I think. Haven't touched them in a long time. I think there is a thread about that camera I got on here somewhere.

JTs equipment would be used at NASA compared to most peoples cameras.

Well I'm graduating from a Canon... so that puts Canon in pre-school then... ;)

We also have Nikon coming in mid-January for classes too...

I agree, JT does waste a lot of money on Canon

But, Canon is a better company than most manufacturers who NASA gets their equipment from.

How is that graduating? Why in the world would you leave Canon, who has some of the best glass out there, and one of the biggest (the other being Nikon) selections of bodies, lenses, and accessories? Not to mention a huge support network including CPS (Canon Professional Services). If I were to leave Canon then I'd only go to Nikon and that's it.

Waste money?? Wow, from the shots of his that I've seen it doesn't look like he's wasting money to me. It's only wasted when you buy equipment and you don't know how to use it.

You seem to love to stir the pot here and ruffle everyone's feathers, so yes I suppose we are pretty "sensitive".

So I don't keep stirring the pot in my own thread, I'll just leave this be.

After talking with your Sofa King Admin, I decided that I would explain my point as it appears to have been missed.

It is graduating because I have no need for such a huge selection of lenses or bodies. I only need what will suit me and Olympus offers just that. I am realistic in my goals and will never have a need for a $6,000+ camera body. I am also graduating to a more cost effective system. I do more telephoto photography and have a great need for image stabilization. Considering that Olympus' in body IS is more effective than in lens IS and that I don't need to pay a couple hundred dollars extra per lens, I'm pretty sure that is better for me.

I also have no need for a huge support network... all that tells me is that their products need support. I like mine to work out of the box.

Also, Olympus' lenses are all made with the same quality of glass. The only difference is that they are faster and sealed better. With Canon and Nikon, their cheaper lenses are junk. Also, they are mostly designed for full frame. Olympus lenses are specifically designed around their image sensor size. Having a full frame lens on a smaller frame sensor produces softer images. While some people like that soft effect, I'd rather add it later if I want it rather than trying to sharpen a soft image.

With the exception of their cheap lenses, both Canon and Nikon make fantastic products. I just find that Olympus suits my needs better.

I was responding in jest. They put smilies in there for a reason... seriously. JT takes excellent photographs, I highly doubt he would take what I said as an insult in any form or fashion. If he does, well, I'm sure someone here will give him a hug and tell him that I'm nothing but a dirty liberal Olympus noob ;)

I know you were responding in jest and we're really not that sensitive. :D As for needing a $6,000.00 camera.... I will never need one either. I shoot with a 30D at the moment and I shoot high school seniors, portraits, and weddings. Eventually I do want to move up to a 5D though. I'm not sure how a full frame lens produces softer images on a crop sensor, I've never had anything but tack sharp images when using a full frame lens on my 30D albeit they were mostly "L" lenses.

Canon Professional Services is only there as a courtesy, you have to join to use them but they are a lifesaver when you need them. It doesn't mean that their product is inferior right out of the box. They are there in case you break something and need it fixed. Depending on your membership level you can get equipment on loan while yours is in for service. Not all of their cheaper lenses are junk, some of them do produce nice quality images.

Really, if you find that Olympus works for you and produces images that are up to your standards then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks... I was just giving you a hard time and rattling your cage

I appreciate the response! :) I was really beginning to feel like I was doing nothing but annoying the snot out of everyone; that's why I stopped visiting the political forum. Anywho, I like this board, not because Sofa King is my RL friend, but because you are almost all local and seem to know your ways around photography (even if you are all a bunch of train geeks ;) )

Gotta get back to work... I'll respond more later :)
