I kinda like the Life Like Engines but cannot stand those Traction tires, on any engine. Is there an alternative to using the traction tires at all? More weight in the engine? Different trucks/ wheels?

What kind?

What kind of engines are you using, steam or diesel? Also, what brand are they; Proto 2000, Proto 1000, Heritage Series,?

I used to run our crappy cheap Bachmann locomotives full speed around the test track, traction wheels falling off...ended up using the excel knifes to cut them off... We would add more weight inside the engine, seemed to help with tractive effort.
