n scale gladstone yard

Unread post by rdenman62 »

Here is my current version of gladstone yard. It is based on a LDE found in the Model Railroad Frieght Yards book. I made a few changes like eliminating the turntable to make room for a larger diesel maintainence facility. Most everything else is copied from the book. The layout is 14' long by 2' wide. the closet area used for staging is 7' long by 4' wide. I haven't quite figured out how I going to use the staging area yet. All track is down except in staging but not yet wired for operation. The track is all peco code 80 with peco insul frog turnouts. I'll be using Prodigy Advance 2 DCC. Any comments, suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.....

By not using the Turntable, I beleive you lost some of the Character of the yard, however, It looks really nice

I thought about what you said about the turntable and I might just be able to fit one in......just above the east ladder coming off the one track that leads to the diesel shop.....here are a few pics to show what I might try..paper plate obviously is the stand in for the turntable..better character for the yard?

Much better, Its been a very long time since I've been to Gladstone but one of the things I distinctly remembered was that they still had the turntable and they still used it. I'm going to guess that your layout is going to be a point to point based on the CNW/WC/CN Yard in Gladstone?

You're mostly correct on the layout being point to point....the closet area is staging right now but it would be a great place for a helix to give me a two deck layout.....the west end of the yard has to turn due to room constraints, but my thought was to continue that to a center peninsula then to the other side of the room where I would model Wells, MI and even some part of Escanaba........then I could also justify E & LS locomotives maybe even their little shop area......................if you're going to dream,,,,,,,,DREAM BIG!!

yes I was planning on doing that...thought it would be an excellent industry to give some operational variety to the layout.....without looking at my map, i believe it also is a interchange point for els & cn and also the cn ore sub crosses just to the east of the plant. am I correct or do I have some thing mixed up?

I believe you're pretty accurate, rdenman62. I don't know what the traffic is like now but at one time not that long ago I think that plant was good for around 40 cars a day of inbound clay slurry, coal, limestone slurry, pulp wood, and other chemcials and outbound paper and wood pulp.

Thanks, I didn't know traffic density to the paper mill. Problem is now is how to incorporate the crossing of the ore sub with the manistique sub with the els interchange the paper mill yard and all the other goodies I got to have...oh lets not forget the els shop area too......

I'm not familiar enough with the area to comment on your accuracy but it seems to me you've captured the "essence" of the area. Will yu have staging yards?

yes I will have some staging....the "closet area" will have staging and possible a helix.....there will be a lower level for the ore subdivision for trains that will enter for that session...it will consist of loaded ore cars from the mines to the dock( staging),,then pick up empties to return to the mines...staging area is Trout Lake/Sault Ste Marie in closet......the other end will be Escanaba staging,,,,,modeled area is from gladstone,mi to wells,mi...

Progress on the Gladstone Yard layout is progressing. Track has been wired for operation and runs great. Room has been painted and really changes the overall view. I also painted the track and it turned out pretty good. Now I'll go back and do some fine touch up like adding some more rust to the rails. here are some pictures showing the progress. now I know the locomotives in the pictures are not the right roadnames but they'll soon all end up in the paint shop....the pics were taken by my better half as she was trying out her new digital camera

Actually BNSF, UP, CR, NS and CSX power have shown up in Gladstone in the winters when the WC (CN) would run ore from the DMIR to the dock in Escanaba since the locks were closed. Several times the locos made it up to the mines on the SORE trains and on 411 and 412. I shall go look to see if the Ore Yard has the all rail cars in it this year. I believe they stopped that move a year or so ago.

update on progress here.....the only thing that has gotten done has been installing decoders in all my locomotives..current roster includes 2 GP38, 3 GP40-2, 2 SD45, 2 SD40, 1 SD35, 5 SD50, 4 SD9...all have decoders except for the 5 SD50......I know CN/WC doesn't have SD50, except for the "SD50F" correct? Too expensive to covert these with Kaslo Shops shells,,,,maybe I should change roads? Maybe Chessis System? But I like the upper peninsula of Michigan.....I think I'm having issues deciding which way to go.........................WC, CN, Chessie.....SOO,,,,,,,
