654 had been sitting inside the Joliet car shop for almost a year. The SD18, 616, has been sitting out in front of the car shop for about the same length of time. There are also a couple SW1200s stored under the paint shed, they were stored inside the roundhouse until CN demolished it.

Just the SD18 and maybe 2-3 switchers are stored at Joliet Yard.

CN is starting to cut up many of the old IC SD40-2Rs that are still at Homewood.

All of the IC SD40-2s, SD40As and SD40-2Rs have been retired. In addition about 20 SD40-2Ws, five GP9rs, many GP9RMs, WC 6004 and WC 6005 were retired as well.

Below are the amount of SD40 series units remaining on CN(not including DMIR and B&LE):
SD40-2: 20
SD40-3: 47
SD40-2W: 80
SD40u: 21
Total: 168

I may be wrong, and I'm no CN expert, but aren't there several of them working up in Ore Country?

Those are classed as SD40-3s.

Ah, didn't even think about that. Is CN doing any kind of upgrading program on the retired IC SD40-2's, or are those likely to be torched?

They have already started to torch some of them and the rest are currently listed in CN's "December Surplus Auction". As I recall they were rebuilt about 5 years ago.

Sad to see those go. I was always a fan of the "Deathstar" scheme. Thanks for the info Chris.

I was just thinking about those units the other day. Seemed 2-3 years ago every CN train in Michigan had some form of IC SD40-2 on it, and then they were gone. Are any left in general service aside the few that have been transferred to the DMIR? CN seems to be well on their way to ridding themselves of 6 axles with anything older than a 710.

Hey Chris will you post the link to the surplus list? Don't forget 5 of the IC SD40-3's and one of the DM&IR SD40-3's up in Duluth were/are being scrapped as they were involved in a head on collision on the DM&IR.

Time to bump this thread also, Was at Homewood Ill on Memorial day weekend and seen Unit # 6401 out behind the shop it looks like it was coupled to a string of retired locomotives, I hope this old DT&I Straight GP40 has not met it's fate. This is painted in Operation Lifesaver paint.

The GTW 6401 is stored, and has been so for nearly a year now.

The GTW 6401 is a recent addition to Homewood. It was up in Wisconsin for a while before making its way to storage.
