Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread

Unread post by BL2-1843 »

In addition to my last post of Dec. 20th, I have discovered the current rebuild GE roster consists of many additional units. They are:
7039-7045, 7403-7408 and 7560-7575.

21 units have now disappeared off the roster and have either been retired for one reason or the other, or have been, or are currently being in the process of being rebuilt. They are: 61, 84, 138, 145, 152, 161, 217, 229 ,247, 304, 310, 336, 347, 527, 531 ,534, 547, 563, 565, 575, 594.

With seven additional units added to the 7000 series, the first six listed above are the numbers used to become this group. Also, nine of the 21 units now not listed were NOT yet known to be on the list of units going to Erie for rebuild. Three additional units on the list going to Erie in 2024 are: 71, 352 and 512. Two units that WERE on the list for 2023, 413 & 554 now not.

It looks now as if they are really going to town on getting units rebuilt after the long strike at Erie awhile back and other reasons that caused a long delay in getting more G.E''s rebuilt. We should soon know what older units will become what numbers in addition to the those noted in the 12-20 post.

CUTE, And you know He would, and still might. 5119 was the only one I did not yet have as going to Erie for rebuild. 591 had already been reported as being the new 7570.

Found the former numbers with photos for 3 more Wabtec rebuilds today which have been delivered to CSX at Selkirk.

7043 = 152
7044 = 161
7045 = 145

All of the older 7600-7900 & 9000 series GE units that had been reactivated a few years ago after years in storage, have now been ordered back into storage, perhaps forever as most of these are nearing 30 years old. Only a few currently show still working, but most all of these show "off line" to other railroads and will be stored after their arrival back. This also includes all ten of the rebuilt CW40-8M units in the 7700 & 7800 number series that GE Erie rebuilt for CSX a few years ago. Many of the units from this group never got reactivated after they were first put into storage.

It’s a darn shame that they’re being pulled as they were the last true glimpse of GE’s in the early 90’s that you could see en masse and that weren’t something from a fallen flag, they had a bug number of them out of storage so they weren’t hard to see, unlike other railroads that keep them relegated to certain regions (CN’s remaining dash 8’s on the iron range and BNSF’s in the Chicago area).

They probably pulled them because of reliability issues however. #7894 ended up on CN E280 then leading CN E251 the next day…they had nothing but engine problems with it and it got to the point that the crew shut it down, they ended up keeping it in the lead position, partially as it was fine as a leader with working light, bells, horn, brakes, etc, but nothing else mechanically would work! Also, there was no place to swap it out for another unit and no engines were available for it in Pontiac and/or Detroit! Got very lucky from a railfans perspective that day for sure.

In the end, most likely, all of those dash 8’s have turned their final miles in service. They’re old and beat up. Definitely a sad end to an era but we knew it was coming soon.

Please see the Metro-North NYC heritage unit to see how to do this right.

reportedly 1853 already hit a tree - bent handrails and lost it's horn.

Photos of the latest CSX heritage unit appeared this morning. CSXT 1836, RF&P. It would be neat to one day see this unit side by side with the RF&P nose painted unit 6394.
