Neato.. I saw the photo of a freshly painted csx SD80MAC recently but can't find it now. Neat that all the 80macs will be together again, it's fun watching wick run the roster like a model railroad

The 23 SD40-2s are the ones rebuilt to SD40-2Rs by Conrail in 1993-1994.

NS 3445 is even former B&O SD40, 7484, one a group that was sold to CNJ (Central New Jersey) practically before the Chessie days got started in the early 70s. What goes around comes around.

State of the CSX Locomotive Roster: 2015

There were many changes to the CSX Locomotive Roster this year, but here is a rundown of some of the more notable things, and what to look forward too for this brand new trip around the sun:

Total roster decreases in size
2014 started with 4265 units on the active roster. After the RCPHG4 retirements, along with some other SD40-2s and wreck retirements, 15 units were lost and the roster total now stands at 4250

End of the RCPHG4s
The only type of locomotive that left the roster for good this year was the RCPHG4 class, when most of the units were retired early in the year. The 9151 was the last one working, before finally retired and shipped to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where its “brains” were cannibalized and put on GP38-2s and two of the TORC units. Several of the “drone sleds” also met their maker in GRP and elsewhere. The retired RCPHG4s are either scrapped already, or rusting away…some were recently spotted in Huntington in the deadline, and at least two are still tucked in Wyoming Yard in GRP

Dash 3 Rebuilds off and running…sort of
CSX’s new and continued dash three programs saw few rebuilds in 2014, as the GP38 and GP40 projects began. No further GP40-3s were turned out after the original 6500 (at least that we are aware. The “official” roster shows units up to 6508 rostered). 18 further GP38-3s were completed in Huntington, for 19 currently on the roster. And while no SD40-3s were completed this year, at least a dozen were shipped off property for rebuilding in either East St. Louis at Metro East or out to Boise, Idaho

Repaints, Repaints, Repaints
Repaints were steady through the year, though still lacking behind previous years.

The last CR unit, the 8865, is still rusting in Huntington, future uncertain.

Like the 8865, the 8318, the final YN1 unit, also is stored in Huntington, again facing an uncertain future.

YN2 repaints increased over 2013, with 63 units removed from the scheme discovered. There was one repaint (6296) into YN3 discovered, but it was certainly painted by early 2013. There were 11 retirements, and 3 rebuilds, thanks to the GP38-3 program. The remainder 49 changes were simple YN2 to YN3B paint jobs.

Numbers to bring statisticians joy
Here is a comprehensive breakdown of several measures of the CSX Locomotive Roster.

Paint Schemes:
CR: 1 (8865)
YN1: 1 (8318)
YN2: 970
YN3: 2719
YN3B: 559

Average Fleet Age
Based on build years and rebuild years, the average build (or rebuild) date of a CSX unit today works out to be May of 1992. This is heavily weighed down by the aging EMD fleet, and even the older GEs. All of the C40-8s, C40-8Ws, C40-9Ws, and now a sizeable chunk of the CW44ACs have been around for that often-quoted 20 year “life expectancy” for a GE unit.

Builders & Rebuilders
A breakdown of the builders, or more recent rebuilders, for the entire roster:

Builder…..........total units….% of roster
General Electric.....2112.....49.7%
Electro-Motive.......1697.....39.9%
CSX....................153.......3.6%
All others.............288.......6.8%

All others include:
- Chessie System (18)
- VMV (98)
- Precision National Corp (1)

- Conrail (9)

Looking ahead to 2015:
Several things to look out for this year:

SD80MAC trade
As previously mentioned, all 12 of CSX SD80MACs are on track to be traded to Norfolk Southern and in return 23 NS SD40-2s are supposed to come to CSX. We are awaiting the finalization of that deal currently.

Rebuilds
As previously mentioned, there are GP40-2s and SD40-2s staged at contract rebuilders waiting their rebuilding. It is unknown when, or how many will be completed. Also, there is no firm word on the quantity of GP38-3s expected in 2K15.

New power
At the very least, CSX should begin receiving 75 new Tier 3-rated ES44AHs during the first half of the year, before GE runs out of credits with which to build Tier 3 locomotives. Sometime later (2016), they will also receive 225 Tier 4-rated ES44AHs. It is assumed that the numbering will continue where the ES44AHs left off, beginning with 3175.

So there you have it! The State of the CSX Locomotive Roster, as we begin 2015!

The rent-a-wreck age of CSX may see a revival for most of early 2015. HLCX, CEFX, CITX, OFOX, and FURX leasers are all on property currently, with more stuff from various companies and railroads rumored to be on the way.

CSX has picked up 12 NREX (ex-SP) SD40M-2 leasers over the last month or so. Numbers, specs, and paint below:

NREX 2666 (SD45 carbody**/patched UP paint)
NREX 2683 (SD45 carbody**/patched SP paint)
NREX 2706 (SD40 carbody/patched SP paint)
NREX 2711 (SD40 carbody/patched SP paint)
NREX 2715 (SD40 carbody/patched SP paint)
NREX 2720 (SD40 carbody/patched SP paint)
NREX 2723 (SD40 carbody/patched SP paint)
NREX 2724 (SD45 carbody**/patched SP paint)
NREX 2734 (SD40 carbody/patched SP paint)
NREX 2738 (SD45 carbody**/patched SP paint)
NREX 8580 (SD40 carbody/**unpatched SP paint**)
NREX 8628 (SD40 carbody/patched SP paint)

CSX has also leased 3 SD40-2s from the Lake State Railway. Numbers are LSRC 3067, 3074, & 3095. These three are still in their CITX paint.

CITX SD70M-2s 140 and 142 have been in service down on the south end of the system. CITX 141 should soon join them. All three are former FEC leasers.

More to come later...

Pretty sure I heard Q559 blast off from Robb Avenue with a pair or trio of those NREX trash fires on wheels from my hotel room tonight.

We had these numbers of the new units some time ago, but we didn't actually roll them over yet because they had not been completed. We will be doing this as they are discovered to be out and working, or in transit back to CSX from Idaho.

The numbers were previously quoted above, but the 6501 was rebuilt from a GP40-2, while the 6502 was actually a GP38-2S before the rebuild.

So 6501-6504 are MPI rebuilds, while 6505-6510 are CSX then?

The FEC SD40-2s are confirmed to be leased to CSX...or sometime quite soon. There are also quite a few more of those other rent-a-wrecks than previously mentioned as being noted as leased to CSX, but also haven't yet arrived or been reported.

Alex does CSX have any units of any kind still in service from predecessor roads such as Seaboard or Chessie System or have they all been retired/sold/repainted? I know a few shortlines here and there still use Chessie and Seaboard painted engines. Also, I saw something about a YN1 unit in one of the older posts on this thread, and I have heard of at least two in YN1 until recently. Are all the YN1 units gone?

Why, of course Max! Everything EMD until the SD60 was built for a predecessor. That's not including CR. I have not completed that listing so I have no hard numbers, but I'd estimate there are ~1000 units on the roster from CSX's ancestors

There is one YN1 and one CR unit left. 8865 is CR, 8318 is YN1. Both long-term stored in Huntington, and haven't moved in years.

I'll take the time to mention this: anybody who tells you the 8800s are heading out for rebuild are wrong. Not a single one has moved from Huntington towards MPI for dash-3 rebuilding. There are 23 known units there, including a retired one. They're all in the 8800, 8100 or 8200 series.
