Re: MDOT thinking about Railfan platform in East Lansing
I just noticed that in the aerial photo JT posted, you can see the nasty mudhole that's been on CN's Main 2 for a couple years!

Re: MDOT thinking about Railfan platform in East Lansing
Sure, East Lansing doesn't have the most trains. Yet it's fairly safe and a lot easier for those of us who live nearby to hang out there, rather than making a 4-hour round trip down to OH/IN (which DOES get done a few times a year, for sure!) Sometimes we'll sit at the depot for 3 hours and not see ...

penn central, you wrote that "It wasn't till they started passing these clean air act's and water that the economy started it's downfall back in the 1970's." The recession that began in the fall of 1973 was directly triggered by the Arab oil embargo. Read any economic history and it will explain tha...

Where can one find the revised timetable or even simply a comprehensive list of all the times? Amtrak's site still only shows the May timetable and their announcement about the change only says to check amtrak.com.

Re: CSX Flint McGrew Yard name origination?
There's a reader question about the origin of the name "McGrew" in an early '90s issue of the C&O Historical Society Magazine. The C&OHS couldn't locate any info about the name, either.

Re: HESR Rumor?
On a casual board like this, I'd take the word of any un-named source with a hopper full of salt. Aside from that, a glance at the various aerial photo sites will show that many sections of the grade have been plowed over. Some of the farmers I'm sure wouldn't mind selling or leasing an easement, bu...

Re: Developing a GREAT railroad museum
This discussion is all hypothetical, but a good mental exercise. Should we continue to put resources into the struggling museums we already have, and also attempt to raise money for a brand-new place? Or, should we close most of them and put the resources in one or two new or rebuilt bigger, stronge...

Amtrak 364 problems last night?
Does anybody know why 364 was so late last night? 4+ hours late from at least Niles eastward.

I think what gtw5812 meant was: what's the point of telling people you know the times, but then saying that you can't divulge them? It's a useless addition to the discussion, and especially when that's the only content of the post, it comes across as smug.

What years did trains serve this? Did they stop switching it because the pit closed, or did it go to truck-only? I know the Michigan Interstate served it, but I've found practically no other info, either in books or on the Internet. Line abandonment couldn't have been the reason the trains stopped g...

Re: Michigan House approves Michigan Line purchase
Norm, I have an employee timetable a couple years old and it lists 60/79 speeds for freight/passenger most of the way on the Holly.
It sure will be nice to have the state finally own this, but it will still be a challenge to come up with the money every year to maintain it.

Re: State to buy Michigan line for Amtrak
The article is a nice summary of the situation, but unfortunately there isn't much new in there, beyond the line "we have a verbal commitment" and the mention of drafting timetable changes. Ironically, if the state buys the line it will be a "back to the future" situation, since the state built and ...

If $2.4 million is raised, before over-extending the community's scarce resources on a "memorial park" which calls for a lot of non-memorial stuff in it, the money should be used on one or more of these issues: *Maintenance problems like the peeling window trim and broken sewer line. *Parts of the d...

Re: DURAND PLANS!
$2.4 million would be better spent on continuing to restore and maintain the depot, which doesn't exactly have a secure and stable source of funding. We don't need to spend money on a "children's splash yard" when these things still need attention: *boarded-up windows in the baggage and freight area...
