Re: Deshler Ohio

The original Fostoria F Tower board is in the Marion (Ohio) depot. I am unsure as to who or what owns it, but at least it is in public view. The CTC machine from the Jackson Street tower, I've heard, is at the Smithsonian. I have not been there so I can't say for sure, and I don't know if it is on d...

Re: Deshler Ohio

About 15 years ago I was at the B&O museum in Baltimore. I asked an Individual on the museum staff if the machine from Deshler was on the property and if it were someplace viewable. The reply I got was that it was on the property, in storage, not really viewable by the public. It was explained while...

Re: Another restored NS heritage unit.

The flared radiator, trademark of the SD45, was one of the problems of the design of that particular model. If you look at older photos of EL SD45's and SDP45's, it is apparent there was leakage-the carbody usually ended up stained under the radiator section. It wasn't an EL problem, but the gray te...

Re: Another restored NS heritage unit.

I believe the SD45-2's are usually either on Conrail in Philadelphia or out and about on horseshoe curve. The SD45-2's have not been part of the helper pool around Altoona for about 18 years now. After many years captive in that service, they were released to roam systemwide before the breakup. The...

Re: Best Hotspot for Night-Time (Well Lighted Areas)

Delray Michigan  Just out of curiosity why do you want to rail fan at night? I do the majority of my train watching at night. Always have. Here's why I choose to do so: 1: Cooler temperatures. I don't like to be in miserable heat if I don't have to. 2: Railroad is busier. Minimal maintenan...

Re: C&O 2700

Also, for what it's worth, saying the engine "set the tone for her other famous sisters" is a bit of a stretch. The entire class has a direct bloodline of design from the Advisory Mechanical Committee in the construction of a Super Power Steam locomotive going back to the Erie 2-8-4's of 1927. The V...

Re: C&O 2700

I know what a 2-8-4 means. My question is what is meant by "no other prototype 2-8-4's exist today". If you are referring to the first of the class, maybe. But a "prototype" (i.e. full size, real honest to god piece of railroad equipment, which is what I think the word means)? The C&O 2700's were no...

Re: NARCOA speeder excursions in MI and IN

If you take a look at Narcoa's website, it should have just about all the answers for any questions you may have. While the majority of members have the older motorcars, some have Hyrails. I own an Expedition Hyrail that was retired from Norfolk Southern around 2003. I have it decorated as a Conrail...

Re: CN or IORY Trains To Ironton/Southern Ohio Anymore?

Yes, the first trackage rights were from South Charleston. When that portion of Conrail was abandoned ( I'm thinking around 1982, but I'd have to look), the trackage rights shifted to Springfield.

Re: CN or IORY Trains To Ironton/Southern Ohio Anymore?

I know most of the old routes taken by the DTI south of Washington Court House are no longer in existence. Also would there any future business opportunities/economic reasons for either CN or G&W to send trains to this railroad region I'm not trying to be a jerk by saying this, but it seems if you ...

Nice Pictures. Good job on labeling, too-not enough people label the picture on the index page, making you click on it to see the location.

Re: Cannon and Co. High hood kits.

Sean, A while back I built two NS SD40-2's, both high hood, both Kato. They were built with the Cannon kit. Both kits were easy to build and install, and I kept the original cabs. I removed the cast on headlight and number boards, and the fit right on. I was very pleased with how they came out. I bu...

CG, once the line was CTC'd, where were the dispatchers located? For that matter, was it the same location as before the CTC?

Re: Radio Interference in Deshler?

Some of those things can't be avoided...I get occasional oddities on railroad frequencies at McDonalds too... I know some occasional interference is to be expected, I'm okay with that. This was really powerful, and new. I had not experienced it before. Had it been on any other channel, I would have...

Radio Interference in Deshler?

The last time I was in Deshler, about a week ago, there was some really bad interference on the radio, right on CSX channel one (AAR Channel 08, 160.230). It seemed strongest when you got to the center of town, near the tower. Anyone else experience this? Any ideas what it may be?

Re: 15 years ago on june 1st, 1999

Regarding the naming: Not to nitpick, but are you sure about this? According to the April 1966 timetables of all 3 railroads (PRR, B&O, NKP), the B&O and NKP both refer to it as "NS" Tower while the PRR refers to it as "Lima" Tower. Interesting, as my timetables from January 1, 1971, April 1 1976, ...

[quote="MagnumForce" It did not however give out orders for trains on the Pennsy, it was an order station for the NKP and the B&O though. Pretty interesting.[/quote] I hadn't been thinking about the NKP or B&O receiving orders there, but I should have. I was referring to the PRR side. While I was go...
