Re: Auburn Road signals in Utica being removed

Just drove Eastbound on Dobry in Utica today (7/23/23). They have removed the rails through the street, and have paved over that area with black top. The rail has also been cut short of the crossing. Also drove back Westbound on Auburn Road, where as of today, no such work has been done yet. Its a s...

Re: Shortlines of Michigan Location Updates July 2023

Got stopped this morning on the way to work driving East on Grange Hall Road just North of Holly by a Northbound Lake State train (Don't know the symbol) at 6:20am. He had a CSX leader followed by a Lake State SD70M locomotive, with 113 cars. Some cars in no particular order included 2 long flat car...

Re: CN Train Location Updates - July 2023

This is the second time I've heard of a 253 symbol in recent weeks. Since there was a 253 last night, its likely 253 was the overflow of 251. They used to run an X-251 once and a while, but haven't seen that symbol lately. Whether yesterdays 253 was the overflow of yesterdays or todays 251, I'm not ...

Re: CN Train Location Updates - July 2023

You know, with all those 50 emojis used - I can't help but relate that to railroading. So you've got a locomotive with several cars coming back (backing up) to make a joint, he's rolling back, and the conductor is counting him down over the radio... "5 cars...4...3..." and the engineer is coming bac...

Re: CN Train Location Updates - July 2023

I have heard at least 3 train horns thru Linden where I live this afternoon. Didn’t get up to see what they were.

Re: What is the requirement of working on the rail road

I have a friend who’s about to start at NS doing freight car repair. What kind of stuff is he in for? Not being a railroad employee, I'll answer your question the best I can. Freight car repair in terms of schedule should be more predictable than train crew schedules. If we assume Freight Car Repai...

Re: CN Train Updates - June 2023

Thanks LansingRailfan for the symbol update. I'm now wondering since 251 now terminates in Battle Creek, will the same train continue West as 253 now, or will there be a 251 and 253 on the Holly and Flint Subs to Battle Creek? I'm hoping the Holly and Flint Subs will now have both 251 and 253, but I...

Re: CSX's Plymouth Subdivision

Not trying to burst any bubble here, but unless something comes out that officially speaks to CP coming back to the CSX line across Michigan (Plymouth and GR subs), then its really just something nice to think about. CP can continue using the current NS routing with NO additional cost. As long as th...

Re: Whistle Stop Caboose Ice Cream

Can't go wrong at that place. They sell the Ashby's brand I believe, which is one of the best ice cream brands in my opinion. You can even look West from where the caboose is and see the GLC crossing over Grand River Avenue. You would have to walk up to the sidewalk along the road to get a clear vie...

Re: Arauco in Grayling

Boxcars, ok thanks Doc. Please pardon my ignorance in the particleboard department. I saw (bing maps) a bunch of centerbeams on the new siding there at Arauco, hence my centerbeam assumption for shipping product out, but maybe the C.B.'s are inbound? Ok, so 23 boxcars (assuming 100 tons each) then p...

Re: Arauco in Grayling

Hi Don Simon! So 600,000 tons per year - do we know how much of that will ship out by rail or will most or all of it ship out by rail? If all particleboard ships out by rail, 600,000 tons per year divided by 260 days per year (taking out Saturdays and Sundays) = 2,307 tons per day. 2,307 tons per da...

Southbound 116 by Linden at 11:45am with 150 cars (+/- 1). My car count might be off my 1 or so, but about 150 cars. First 102 are intermodal and the rest were autoracks.

Re: Future of the Plymouth Sub/Grand Rapids Sub

Clearly the sign that they are selling it to CP Hi LansingRailfan. Not sure if your response above was sarcasm or not, but if it was not, could it be that this section of the railroad was just due for regular maintenance? Of course, railroads allocate portions of their annual budget to such project...

Re: What is the requirement of working on the rail road

Good Advice NSSD70ACe. I have never personally worked for a railroad, but grew up around it. My Grandfather and Uncle both worked for the GTW (later CN), and many of my Grandpa's relatives before him. Plenty of stories over the years that have caused me to appreciate what they did for a living, and ...

Re: CN is trading tonnage for schedule

It was interesting that the article states that they don't say "PSR" anymore, its just scheduling now.

Well, somebody's got to say it...if this does lead to a few more trains, from a railfan perspective, I'll take it! Already seeing a fair amount of extras on the CN main lately.

CN is trading tonnage for schedule

CN is apparently realizing very long trains isn't that efficient. I still think running freight trains to an exact schedule is difficult, but it's an interesting article anyway.

Re: CN joins UP and Ferromex for new I/M Service

Hi GTW. It is my thinking that containers will be added to existing trains to start, and will see what happens from there. Now this is only my thoughts, and we will have to see. I saw a Trains Magazine article that a new pair of trains will be added between Chicago and Mexico, but it did not address...
