Re: Elkhart, Ind.

So I have a question. At MP414 (cty rd 17 Dunlap) why do these blocks (EB and WB) rest at yellow over red? In almost all cases when there is nothing going on and the blocks are free of traffic it seems Yellow over red is the default resting aspect. I am used to all red being the dormant aspect.

Re: Elkhart, Ind.

See photo for description of prior post. Track 1 has new ties laid out and track 3 has new ribbon rail laid out. Track 3 looks like it could still use some leveling and the bump out at Sunnyside is still there even though the old block is removed.

Re: Elkhart, Ind.

If you like the track spacing out in Nebraska on the UP here is a better shot from that same trip in 04. Notice 2 lane US30 just off to the right. Its the best parallel train chasing you can do. Look left or right there is always a headlight someplace.

Re: Elkhart, Ind.

Found my old photos of UP movable point frog, take summer of 04. This means each turnout has two switch motors and gas heaters to maintain. But then money is no object here. This shot taken around Kearney, Nebraska.

Re: Elkhart, Ind.

Novice question. At full crossovers like CP417 is it allowed for the dispatcher to move trains directly from 1 to 3 or visa versa EB or WB, and if so at what speed? Is CP417 considered to be a high speed crossover? While out in Nebraska on US30 following UP I noticed they have "high speed" crossover...

Re: Elkhart, Ind.

I am seeing bundles of new ties laid out for track one upgrades and new 1/4 mile ribbons of rail coming down off the delivery train for track 3.

Re: Elkhart, Ind.

With the new signal upgrades Elkhart to Goshen I am seeing flashing light aspects. Something new for us. How would flashing yellow over red over red be interpreted on on track 3? Also, I am told by local historian that at one point between Elkhart and Dunlap there were 6 tracks. Four for the Lake sh...

Re: Elkhart, Ind.

I noticed two newly installed gas forced air heaters at CP417. Does each switch get its own or are more to come?

Re: Elkhart, Ind.

Does anyone know if they will straighten the track 3 bump out around the old track 2 block at Sunnyside crossing?

And what the speed limit will be for track 3 between Goshen and Dunlap if switches are straight thru?

MQT3001
That 9 degree value refers to the sharpness of the curve, not the superelevation
Since I don't know I will have to take your word on it. In fact I don't see it. I only see one turn, from north to northwest which is ~45°. I guess its back to my HO track layout guide.... :)

Re: Elkhart, Ind.

From what I have read (public documents) it is a 9 degree curve good for 20 MPH. I did not look close enough to see if the super-elevation was noted. Yes ... it would be a bad idea to measure it yourself. Unless you are using a laser from a distance and plenty of math. :) (Calculated required super...

Re: Elkhart, Ind.

The new turn onto the Marion branch in Goshen looks finished, except for the street's future. It looks like the turn is super elevated now. Can anyone confirm what I'm seeing and if so what is the angle of the tilt in? I'd rather be told than go out there and measure. Probably get to meet some real ...
