Re: CP 421 Upgrade
Most workers took day off to recover. All new tracks hooked up and open for business. Note supervisor setting by old bridge with radar gun checking trains for 30 mph. Also note platform has 40 foot of asphalt covering crushed limestone giving passengers something nice to lite on.

Re: CP 421 Upgrade
Not sure about the rest of you and I know things change but this is a sad event. Been watching activity on these tracks for over 40 years, once the bridge is gone, its over. Such is the nature of progress. Onward and upward. At noon today the boss's had a nice lunch spread set up for all the guys at...

Re: CP 421 Upgrade
Big day today. Old track 2 at main street is cut. Crossovers on turn already removed. Old track 3 and signal gone. GDLK track cut with torch waiting to be picked and removed. Replacement panel probably be in place by the time I get back. Five front end loaders moving rail and ballast. 50ish white ha...

Re: CP 421 Upgrade
A few shots from yesterday. Note the none symmetrical pavement cut for the Kazoo branch on Middlebury street. The side towards old B tower has a deeper cut removed. I think this suggests the amount of track realignment necessary to bend towards the new track 1 turnout. The cut also reveals the old b...

Re: CP 421 Upgrade
I asked a signal maintainer yesterday what the purpose was for the white gravel next to the new track 1. I was told will be an Amtrak platform. But then he said "but don't count on it, the ink is still wet on the drawing". So perhaps it's going to be a temporary platform. It sure is long though. Goi...

Re: CP 421 Upgrade
As of today the new signal at the east end of the interlock for west bounds is in place with nine signal heads on their three mast. Didn't have camera at the time. Can some else take a shot and post? Just east of the Prairie St overpass behind St Vincent church.

Re: CP 421 Upgrade
As a local railfan I would hope the city and museum would work together and make this new found "park" area a rail park with viewing platform and lower fencing. Could be something like Rochelle some day. Need to involve an architectural site plan drawing. Who knows, if the park might including more ...

Re: CP 421 Upgrade
Perhaps it is the Steamer removed from the Hammond park that is to be cosmetically restored and you saw it on the way there. I believe it was going to either Chattanooga or Spencer.

Re: Elkhart, Ind.
Speaking of Leesburg, at the first signal north of Leesburg at W900N crossing on the south electronics hut I think I see a GPS antenna? What pray tell would this be for? Part of PTC perhaps? Also first time to see new interchange at Claypool yesterday. Lots of new signals. Interconnect track looks t...

Re: Elkhart, Ind.
Sounds like the PTC extension has happened. I had not heard that yet. Fully expected. Last night passing MP414 EB track one was yellow over flashing green. So I surmised 412 would be g-r-r. To my surprise it was r-fg-r. So a flashing signal does not guarantee a solid same color at the next BS, right...

Re: Elkhart, Ind.
Thank you all for these explanations. I always wondered how one could tell the difference between speed control and route. At first it seemed logical that color would be speed and arrangement would be route. But then the old Pennsy position block signals blew that theory. Can one find a copy of the ...

Re: Elkhart, Ind.
So back to my Aug 10th question on block signals. If MP414 is considered an "intermediate" block, what is intermediate about it? Does that mean that all blocks between two control points are considered intermediates no matter how many there are or how long it goes? What other kinds of blocks would a...

Re: Elkhart, Ind.
Question. South of Dunlap I have noticed the dispatchers like to park EB on main 3 just short of Peddlers Village crossing. The block that controls that section (mp412) is around the corner there at Martins and out of sight. Is the train under only radio control at that point? Is that normal?

Re: Elkhart, Ind.
Question for Dunlap signal maintainer: Why now between MP419 and 415 do the crossing gates take so long to lift after passing train? Before the "improvement in signals" arms would lift within 50 feet of end of train clearing. Now, especially Sunnyside, the end of train goes 1/4 mile before arms lift...

Re: Elkhart, Ind.
Thanks for the explanation on intermediates. To me it would seem that a block protects the track behind it, that simple. But with levels of protection and flashing yellows its hard for none employee to know what's up.
