Re: The discussion below begs the question...
There is actually a legal term that is in play in this discussion. I can't remember the term however. The idea is simply that if you own private property, but contiually and knowingly allowing public use of your property, that use becomes legal use of your property. "Prescriptive easement" is the p...

Re: Help! Save Detroit & Mackinac /LSRC ALCO RS2 #469 from s
I think you are completely misunderstanding me, I never said save nothing, I said you can't save everything. I didn't say "save everything". You said that, to argue against saving THIS thing. When you do that... for every single thing that come along... that has the same effect as saying "save noth...

Just what SMRS needs, more junk... Sorry but this everything needs saved mentality is just ridiculous in my view. ...but admit it, you are knee jerking in the opposite direction. You are so appalled by the rust-fest at many museums that you automatically naysay ANY possible acquisition at any museu...

Re: Help! Save Detroit & Mackinac /LSRC ALCO RS2 #469 from s
Good news! The Southern Michigan Railroad Society's board met. The Society is eager to save #469 and provide a permanent home for it. Since SMRS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, all donations toward this project will be tax deductible. A special fund has been set up, but hold that thought, because we would...

Re: Help! Save Detroit & Mackinac /LSRC ALCO RS2 #469 from s
I think many people would like to help, but have no idea what to do, or where to start. I have seen no mention of actual costs involved, in dollars, in any of these posts. All of the posts have been fairly general in nature. Can't do this. Can't do that. Would be too expensive. The average railfan,...

There's a computer game called World of Warcraft. With 16 year old boys of every age and gender on the forums, you have the most unruly forum posters you could have. The official forums are useless. But in this nightmare was born the most civilized forum I have ever seen anywhere. Here are the rules...

Re: Tunnel Paranoia
The tunnel was designed for steam locomotives and regular freight cars, not autoracks or double stacks. Electrics, not steam. Note electric third rail in this picture. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/p/m/1b48ce/ That's an under-running third rail (paddle rubs the bottom part) with cover-board t...

And it's also funny how the electric-vehicle proponents seem to think that the electricity used to charge said vehicles is "free" when it will actually need to be produced by coal-fired or nuclear (etc) power plants, something that it could be argued that most supporters of electric vehicles would ...

Re: New MDOT Rail Plan
I didn't look at every link, but one long-term goal that caught my eye was to move the A&B interchange point from Adrian, to Toledo. I suspect this would involve the restoration of trackage from Riga to Ottawa Lake, with A&B to get trackage rights into Airline Yard. Interesting... I can't imagine t...

Re: New MDOT Rail Plan
If I am not mistaken, for a few years after its creation, Conrail operated up to Tecumseh on the Clinton branch to serve GM subsidiary plant (Fisher Guide, I think). The Fisher Body/Inland plant was located halfway between Tecumseh and Adrian on the former DT&I line owned at the time by Norfolk Sout...

Has anyone spotted any of those Ann Arbor boxcars (50 feet or 90 feet) lately?
I'd like to acquire it for a railroad museum and put it back in the carferry in the fog scheme.

Re: Chevy Volt Production Shutdown
How about an electro-motive car, minus the battery? I've always wondered if this would be more fuel-efficient, esp. with a diesel engine. It could be a cheaper way to squeeze more miles out of a gallon of gas (or diesel). I've wanted that since I was sixteen years old. But if you're after "cheaper"...

Re: Chevy Volt Production Shutdown
Wow I am lost! Its a electric car that you charge, but you dont charge? Yeah, I know. Lots of people are lost. And I know the facts having watched this field for 20 years but I'm not so good at getting them across. Here, think of it as an evolution on the Prius and Ford Escape hybrid. If you have a...

Re: Chevy Volt Production Shutdown
Calling the the Volt an electric car would be like calling a modern locomotive an electric locomotive. I wasn't aware that a locomotive could run on just the traction motors without the diesel engine running. Is that the case? Yes, if there's a large battery that can provide traction power. Here is...

This is an Email we got at my work this past week... Yes I know I work for 1 of the Biggest Competitions, with VW Diesel's, but this information is correct. No, it is definitely NOT. It is wrong, it's past wrong. I'd call it intentionally lying. You decide. Cost to operate a Chevy Volt Eric Bolling...

Both of those cars went to East Troy Electric Railroad where they are lovingly preserved as South Shore cars. Worked out for the cars, at least.

Re: Adrian and blisfield and railfans
ADBF and SMRS were laid around the same time, same county, same company, same kind of land acquisition. They were laid before easements for railroads were common. SMRS owns all of its land outright; I presume the same is also true for the railroad ADBF runs on. SMRS RoW is 80 feet wide. I'd presume ...
