That's a doozey. As I understand it, CSX used to take the coal trains up to Essexville in two pieces. Someone at the Lake State got greedy and decided that it would be cheaper to run them north as a single train, rather than two movements. I would think it would be better to fix the track and train ...

The following was posted on the [obsessivelocominutiaenotes] Yahoo! list this afternoon. I cannot verify the information, but it sounds like good news. It is interesting to read in light of several posts on the Internet indicating several of these locomotives had been cut up. Post: "The 469, 974, 97...

I spotted a classic Sperry car in Shreveport, LA, last week. It was at the KCS engine terminal and seemed to be in service.

Didn't these idiots know the tracks were there when they bought their houses? It's nice that he CEO of the railroad is willing to meet with the neighbors, but he's hardly obligated to do anything for them.

Thanks for the information. I thought it was strange that the car was left there with no evidence of any trucks near the car. Seems like it could have been much worse if it had derailed on the Saginaw River bridge.

Saginaw Derailment Question

I shot this photo several weeks ago on the Lake State's line to Midland. It looks like the bottom was torn out of two of the unloading hatches. Does anyone know what happened here?

First off, the comparison of the Michigan line with the NYC main across Ohio is baseless. Even if there wasn't a single industry in the entire state of Ohio, the Water Level Route would still be maintained to current standards simply because it's a part of a greater whole. The NS main across Ohio is...

I thought I was going to witness something similar two years ago. I was set up to take a shot of one of the Michigan Service trains along the Huron River, about five miles from the site of the suicide. There was an errant trespasser on the ROW, and while not hit by the train, the cone of air knocked...

My experiences with Lake State personnel indicate that the Mr. Jim George, owner, simply wants to bilk as much money from the railroad as possible while investing the absolute minimum in infrastructure. Hence the current situation with the weekly train derailments. When things become totally unworka...
