Any traffic under the Blue Water Bridge?
Hey fellow railfanners, I recently discovered the webcam at Port Huronunder the Blue Water Bridge that covers ship traffic into and out of the St Clair river. I noticed there is a railway line in the foreground that seems to run along the water's edge to Dunn Paper. Can anyone tell me if there is st...

Re: Update on CSX Pleasant Street Tower
It always strikes me as sad when structures like this are torn down versus being repurposed. I'm betting a local model railroad club would have been happy to put in some 'sweat equity' to have a clubhouse and possibly a home for their layout, ala the AAMRC in Dexter...

Anyone going to the Spike 150 Celebration?
Greetings, MI Railfans, I purchased tickets to take my dad to Utah via Amtrak on 5/8 for the 150th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike. We're on the early train to Chicago and the CA Zephyr for the day-and-a-half to SLC arriving Thursday night. Just curious: Is anyone else active on this ...

For anyone at the depot, please post whether they are running with the lights on and when they come through. I will share the same info when they come through Melvindale.

Re: CP Holiday Train: Lights Out?
This is so disappointing. Although the crowds at Intercity Baptist and John Riel Park in AP are large, they are fairly respectful, though I have seen people on the tracks at the diamond for the last two years. Couple the safety with the liability and bye bye Holiday Train. Such a shame. I have to ad...

"Man, I am so sick of this company crying broke all the time."
Is that more or less often than we hear the term "cash-strapped" used to describe Detroit?

Re: Derailment at Melvindale yard
Thanks for the information, guys. I really felt bad for the engineer. I'm glad to know that it wasn't that big a deal to get the truck back on the tracks.

Update: Maybe not a big surprise, but everything looked cleared away and fine this morning at around 6:30. Not sure how they got the car back on the tracks, but I was too tired to stay out there and watch...

Derailment at Melvindale yard
Well guys, this is a first for me. Got to see a switch get thrown under a train car as a switcher was pushing a string back from the diamond near John Riel Park. Went over and got to talk to the engineer, mentioning that in over thirty years of railfanning I had never seen a derailment. In retrospec...

Noob Q: More traffic Saturday morning?
Greetings, Railroadfans, I have noticed that there seems to be a lot more activity in and out of the NS Melvindale yard on Saturday mornings. A friend of mine suggested it was because the railways either a) don't have the same fines for blocking grade crossings or b) can 'get away with it more' beca...

Re: Ferromex and BNSF in Melvindale Yard
Thank you for the replies. This is a really helpful group. I guess I never considered that railway companies 'rent' locomotives from each other. That will certainly make my walks to the park more interesting! A shame I didn't see that Ferromex locomotive in the daytime. The color scheme looks pretty...

Ferromex and BNSF in Melvindale Yard
Greetings, fellow railroadfans! We (family and I) are in the process of moving to Allen Park, not far from the diamond at John Riel Park. A couple of nights ago I spent the night at the new house and took an evening walk to the park and did a couple of laps around the footpath. Traffic was plentiful...

Re: Radio question from a radio newbie
Thanks, all, the Danny Harmon suggestion was excellent- it taught me the basics of what I needed to know. I guess all I really need now are the scanner, the road channels for my two railway lines, and to figure out the mile markers and locations near me to listen for and I'm good to go. Very cool!

Re: Radio question from a radio newbie
Thanks, all, for the feedback. I'll definitely look into the scanners you recommended. Frankly I'm not as concerned about the quality (as maybe I should be) because I plan to just have it stationed (no pun intended) in the garage plugged into an audio system alongside my iPhone. My hope is that ther...

Radio question from a radio newbie
All, In approximately one week a lifelong dream of mine will come true- I will be closing on a house that's located about a block from an active railway line. The house is fairly close to John Riel Memorial Park which sits near the "big tire" in Allen Park, Michigan. Map coordinates: 42.269132, -83....

Re: Newbie Question: What's a 'Foamer'?
a foamer is ...or my favorite a plain freight car. Bull. It's hard to build accurate models of equipment without decent photos. It's hard to build an accurate model of just about anything without reference material, hence the reason people take photos of the equipment. I have to agree here, though ...

Re: Newbie Question: What's a 'Foamer'?
The guy spraying the foam and who made the sign is one of us   .[/quote] Ah, so 'Foamer' is like 'Redneck', in that it can be taken as an insult or a badge of honor, i.e.: "If a leggy supermodel in a string bikini standing in front of you gets passed by a freight train and your eyes natura...
