Re: GLC vs Truck 8/4/2015

The intersection, to the east and south of Ithaca, is marked only by a railroad crossing sign and a yield sign, with no arms or flashing lights. Wright said having a yield sign at train crossing is not uncommon in rural Gratiot County. I guess I havent' driven enough on rural roads, because I just ...

Re: A section of the Old Road is being taken up

:? [quote= Tom, how much money did you have tied up in this matter ? Zero ? You should have purchased the ROW so you could had a place to ride your bike. Interest was not ignored, there just was not enough interest in a trail that the ends would be in the middle of BFE ! Also the improvements you h...

Re: A section of the Old Road is being taken up

The trail is not a done deal. This whole process was fishy if you ask me. Fishy? Explain? I would like to hear your point.... People here do not want to pay for it. Land owners want their land back and absolutely do not want cyclists in their back forty (or on the roads for that matter). Public inp...

Re: Old Road News?

Plans seem to be going forward. There was a meeting of mostly property owners in late February and a few others since. The trail has been named the Tamarack Rail Trail and if you google that there are a few news articles. Lots of info in the stories needs to be taken with a grain of salt, especially...

Re: The discussion below begs the question...

The highway right of way is for more than just driving. Blue Cross Blue Shield of MI vs Ingham County Road Commission went all the way to the State Supreme Court. The Supreme Court upheld the Road Commission right to issue permits for other uses in the ROW. In this case it was the installation of a...

Re: Michigan Southern

One more comment / question. In the google maps image, it appears the business just south of Bogan rd, on the east side of the tracks has a recently built/renovated spur. The balast pops out as white, compared with all the nearby tracks being a dull gray. Was this to serve a customer, or does this ...

Awesome. The best part is all those hoarded Twinkies people are trying to sell on Ebay will be worthless. Serves 'em right. I couldn't find a single one after the announcement.

Re: Michigan Southern

They run frequently to international paper and Abbott. There are quite a few cars stored near the old Sturgis Depot currently and they seem to move them or add to them frequently. The line South of Sturgis is very quiet. I haven't seen anything at Miller's in a year. They did bring two hoppers to Bo...

Re: The discussion below begs the question...

Highway right of way is public use for the purpose of driving only. You can't do anything but drive on it. Note that right of way extends past the driven portion, and the road authority can remove trees or signs within the right of way without permission - usually 33 or 66 feet either side of the ce...

Re: The discussion below begs the question...

Is your front yard a parking lot? If so they can park there. Are they parking on your front lawn? If so I would have the very first car towed, and all others that parked there. If there is an easement or common area in front of your house for parking I think you're SOL. My policy is that anything on...

I rode a Penn Central train out of Union Station to Niagara Falls in maybe 1970. I had a model of that F-unit for many years on my O-scale layout.

Take a "scenic drive" out Woodward, from downtown to 8 mile, and then we'll talk about it. Listen to a scanner sometime. No scanner? You can listen to the Detroit Fire dept live online now! . I said I never had any problems there based on my experience. Maybe I just imagined it. I didn't say it was...

Re: Woodward Light Rail

NYCMan has got a point. Does the city realize how many murders, rapes, and abductions (or all 3 combined) happen in the neighborhoods that the light rail system would run through? The fact the trains would stop in the neighborhoods would give the ability for these offenders to board the train and h...

Re: Fenton will reluctantly pay $12,390 in railroad fees

OK, I live in Fenton and have a 25-year news reporting background. Most (if not all, believe it or not) of the comments here thus far are accurate and correct, in my view. However, one minor possibility here is that the DPW guy is quite new to his job. He may not have known (as RDD said) that CN ha...

He shoulda been able to hear it as they were coming by the western areas of Grandville. Several minutes to get in the clear. I argee with the fine idea. Anytime the car is at-fault , $2,500 dollar fine. If it causes injury, and additional sum for each person injured. Edit: I'll quote him: I heard t...

The trail group didn't show up at the last meeting to discuss the Rail Trail -- but the residents along the line sure did! There is definitely not a lot of support for a trail out here. After May 7th INER may abandon the line.

Re: West Michigan RR Abandonment Petition Coming

After what happened in White Piegon to the Alco's I would guess Pioneer might just scrap the cars on site. JT what two locos are in Hartford. I know 1616 is in one of the 3 engine sheds in White Piegon. Pioneer has boxcars and a hopper there to scrap as they are marked the same as those in your pic...

Re: West Michigan RR Abandonment Petition Coming

When they remove the tracks from Lawrence to Paw Paw is there any chance of growing any business aside from the 1 customer in Hartford? What is the purpose of Pioneer keeping an engine for 1 customer of 2-3ish cars a week on a mile stretch of track? You could order 3 carloads of lumber and delay th...
