Re: LS&MS Grand Rapids Division Pics
According to my friend the late Bill Pontius, ( he was the agent in Allegan in the late 1960's). At that time, the local out of Kazoo went as far north as Byron Center. Then would turn back. The late Russell Thomas, was the regular engineer on that run, and Bills dog would board the engine at Allega...

Re: K-Val Hobbies in Buffalo to close
Sadly that's the trend. I've lost several hobby shops nearby in the past 10 years or so. I think it has kind of a "WAL*MART" flavor to it though. You see that "Walthers" has taken over the mail order end of the hobby, but in the past 5-6 years they have almost DOUBLED their prices on the SAME items....

Dales RR history board IMPLOSION!!!
Anyone here see the latest feud over there between Paul and Don? It was darn near outta' control for a week! Where was Dale? There were some questions as to that . A discussion board needs a moderator that actually PARTICIPATES in the board. This board is well overseen by Zach. I've been known to ge...

C&O, Last train across "High Bridge"..
I've asked this before, but once again... The old Pere Marquette line between Baldwin and Kaleva was lifted in 1955, but I'm trying to nail down the date of the last train to go over "high bridge". I have conflicting stories. Some say it was 1950, some say 1955. I realize that the 1947 merger of the...

Re: CN's Port Huron Tunnel
I have a VERY GOOD book on the Sarnia -Port Huron tunnel. Written by Clare Gilbert. ISBN is: 1-55046-045-5
Covers all aspects of the tunnel, from early construction, to current (1992) operations.. It doesn't cover the "New" tunnel.

Re: Paul Baumgartner Passes, 10/8/2014
I never had the honor of meeting Paul, but I read a few stories he submitted to "Trains Magazine". and it was just like I was there beside him witnessing everything, like I was on the crew. I camp alongside the old MN tracks once in a while.. Near Fife Lake. Tracks run right past the campground. Bac...

Re: Lost Railroad Town Kalkaska Area
Yeah, even before reading the replies, I knew he was thinking of Stratford. I've read just about every book on Michigan ghost towns. ( Kind of fits in with old RR grades). Now, when the OP,"pixl" mentioned the old Manistee and North Eastern, and Sigma, and the old "River Branch"... That ignited the ...

Re: Found a lonely mile marker near TC
As an edit to that above..... This was in the mid-1970's.. I have been trying to figure out if the C&O changed the mileposts after 1955, when they abandoned the Baldwin-Kaleva route in favor of Baldwin- Walhalla-Manistee-Kaleva, In order to decommission High Bridge over the Manistee river. That woul...

Re: Found a lonely mile marker near TC
Many fond childhood memories from "Healy Lake Campground" just north of Kaleva, in Manistee county. The old P.M./C&O went right past the campground. We would run up to the tracks twice a day, when we heard the horn... There was a concrete milepost there as well.. It was "GR 136".

Re: Any good historical books on railroads of Michigan?
There is one really great book, almost the "Holy-Grail" of Michigan RR history.. "All Aboard!" by Willis F. Dunbar. It's a bit dated, published in 1969, but one of the best overviews of Michigan RR history ever written. 308 pages of Mich. RR history written by a professor of mich. history at WMU. Mo...

Re: Amtrak Woverine power/ coaches
WOW! that was a great trip down "memory lane". Every image here represented an era that I can remember. Even the D&H Alco PA units. I saw one of them going east on the Amtrak bluewater ltd. one evening. Probably right after their rebuild at Morrison-Knudsen out in Idaho. I don't know the exact date,...

Re: CN #399
Seriously though, what was a "herd of cows" doing on the CN ROW? I thought that CN maintained fences in rural areas. Is that up to the farmers now? I think the farmer should get a good settlement from CN on this... Assuming that CN failed to protect their right of way. The CN bulls are all about pro...

I think the home signal for the PRR diamond was right there at the tower. Most likely reason is the close proximity of the passenger station.
Thanks GP30, for moving the thread.

That is BEAUTIFUL !!!! I have an HO scale version by NJ Brass, but your large scale hack is AWESOME! Funny thing, when I was a kid, I saw these things all the time, and never really cared about them. But now, I have memories of them heading up a reverse move from Rumely yard to Main yard, reversed a...

kalamazoo picture on "that other site"....
I recently saw a photo by John Barriger posted on the MRR site. It shows the Penn tower, with BO in the background. There was a question as to who was the operator standing in the doorway of the tower. I know who it is, but Dale Berry still has me banned from his forum after about 7 years. So, I can...
