Re: Shortlines Train Locations Updates - March 2024
The 20 covered hoppers are empty and originated in Hamilton ON, home of National Steel Car. It appears they were entered into the AAR system on March 1st. AITX is a car leasing and repair company, American Industrial Transport with heritage back to American Car and Foundry which was started in 1899....

Re: C&M Running Freight
Klein Fertilizer was the customer in Marne. 100 tons in a hopper was turned into 45-50 lb bags. No automation - an employee filled a bag and then ran the sewing machine across the top and placed it on a pallet. When Klein closed down Blenco was going to use the plant to bag golf course blend fertili...

Re: MIGN Customers
Correction on the Kent County Road Commission - they received a timber box culvert in the 60's PRR days. I saw the paperwork in the file. As for gravel, the county owned their own plant for years and made their gravel in county owned pits. Later they got rid of their plant and hired contractor. Sand...

Re: Diamond in Grand Rapids
This thread brings backs a lot memories. My dad started at American Seating in 1940 as a die maker. He passed away in 1982 as the Supervisor of Tooling. So when I was growing up if my dad went in to his office on Saturday to catch up, I got to wander around the office building that was demolished a ...

Re: Michigan Grades
I was asked by a supervisor on the GR what the grade was on the Amway siding. I was curious and asked why. He said slowly: the crew slid across M-21 and...thru the gate. And then he added: not once but twice. So I went and measured it- 3.0%

"Can you give some examples of the inaccuracies so we know what to be on the lookout for? Or is it just generally outdated or something else? Look at the CPMY. The GR leased to Marne in 1998?. It was not renewed in 2003. It still shows it's leased. In defense of the poor RR person that gets to fill ...

No. The architects and I use the term very loosely, cannot visualize where and how it will situated. This drawing has the freeway in the wrong location. Should be 90 degrees counter clockwise

Re: Top 5 Michigan Rail Lines that should've been left in place
Yes, RR's have to pay property taxes and as well as tax on their assets ie cars, locomotives etc. But the taxes are paid to the state not the local units of government. It used to be the RR's paid to maintain their track and paid the taxes. Then the state offered a tax credit of 25% of the track mai...

Re: East Palestine, Ohio Major NS Derailment
I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned the "bomb train" with loaded hazmats from Midland TX to Midland MI and the empties back to TX. One of the posters said it was limited to 40mph in Northern MI but I know it was 25 mph in the Grand Rapids area. Every jurisdiction the train passed through got...

That sure looks like the spot Standard. Also, I see another spur circled in green. Any idea if that was another mining site? A 3D satellite image of the gypsum mine site. (I toured the mine shafts in 1976) The building is what was was left of the Grand Rapids Gypsum mill. The mill produced drywall ...

Re: Petroleum Barges to Frankfort, MI (Question)
I had a conversation with our BitMat salesman back in those days. Western Michigan asphalt cement, seal coat oil etc came from Frankfort. He said the barges came from Green Bay. I was assuming it was come from Whiting IN. He said no. Green Bay, some kind of agreement between BP and Koch.
